| Description |
A couple from the crowd dance during a performance by the Royal New Zealand Navy Band. Art Deco Weekend is held in Napier, New Zealand to Commemorate the Napier Earthquake, a magnitude 7.8 earthqauke on the richter scale, which occured on the 3rd February 1931. It commemorates and celebrates the rebuilding of the city in the Art Deco style which is still seen around the city. The weekend itself has a varitey of services, tours and attractions and the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) has quite a strong presence during the weekend, as it did after the 1931 earthquake. One ceremony in particular, the Veronica Bell Commemorative Ceremony is a full military service (this year supported by the personnel of the HMNZS Canterbury) where the Veronica Bell, (the bell from the Navy ship, Veronica which provided assistance after the earthquake) is installed and rung. It is then guarded by the sea cadets for the afternoon. |
