Summary

Description

Introduced in 1928, Plymouth was Chryslers lowest priced car, Dodge was next, then Desoto and Chrysler was top of the line. It was built as an inexpensive family vehicle to compete with Ford and Chevy. The 1942 Plymouth was a heavier looking car, the bottom of the doors flared out to cover the old running boards and it got a heavier flatter looking grille. It got a new more powerful engine from Dodge. The assembly line was shut down early in 1942 and reopened in 1945 after the War. Postwar Plymouths were virtually unchanged until being replaced early in 1949, just the grille and parking lamps changed. For 1947, two models were available; The Deluxe P14S was available in 2 door Coupe, 2 and 4 door Sedan. The Special Deluxe P14C was available in Convertible, 2 door Coupe, 2 and 4 door Sedan and Wagon. These Coupe Utilitys were built in Australia. Ford Australia was the first company to produce a coupe utility as a result of a 1932 letter from the wife of a farmer in Victoria, Australia asking for “a vehicle to go to church in on a Sunday and which can carry our pigs to market on Mondays”.
