Source description:
Fight of drunken monkeys and bears' was painted in 1720 by Pandit Seu of Guler (ca. 1680–1740). In the foothills of the Himalayas, the Pahari region of India, important stylistic developments occurred in the period between 1730 and 1810. The greatest painters of that time came from Pandit Seu’s workshop in Guler who produced works that are among the most beautiful products in all Indian painting. The setting of this particular painting is the Madhuvana Grove. In a sequence of naturalistic movements, Pandit Seu paints drunken monkeys and bears, falling over themselves in a forest clearing, set amongst the trees and banana groves. Although the theme is unusual, pictorial conventions of the time, such as structural composition, distinct outlines and strong background colours, still predominate. This is an image of the famous artwork.
