Fastway Couriers is the world's largest courier franchise, operating in ten countries world wide, providing worldwide delivery[citation needed].

History

Established in April 1983 by founder Bill McGowan. The idea was to operate cost effective courier services from Napier to Hastings NZ, operating with a simple pricing structure. Bill started out with Company Drivers, he had noticed that no new work was being generated, He decided the time was right to introduce Franchising. Franchising the transport industry had never been done anywhere in the world before. The franchising was successful. In 1993 Fastway decided it was time to franchise in Australia, the Australian franchise is a huge success, Bill however made a mistake, he moved most of his key personal to Australia, He thought that he could run Australia & New Zealand himself, in the end Bill had to appoint a NZ CEO and Australian CEO, which resulted in the disaster being reverted. Today Fastway is franchised in New Zealand, Australia, UK, South Africa. Fastway has gone bankrupt in a number of countries such as Canada, Morroco, Spain, Singapore and France.

Structure of Fastway

The Fastway structure is unique as they operate in a three-tiered Pyramid scheme approach:

  • National Master Franchisee

Establishes and operates the Fastway system for an entire country providing management services and training and support to all franchisees in the country or state.

  • Regional Franchisee

Operates a depot and administration facility within a city, town, or region providing business services to Courier Franchisees.Operates a depot and administration facility within a city, town, or region providing business services to Courier Franchisees.

  • Courier Franchisees

Carries out the actual courier work from their vehicle, calling on customers within their exclusive territory. Couriers generally work approx 14 hours a day 5 days, which is 70 - 80 hours a week.

Brand identity

Fastway takes great care in ensuring that their brand is consistent for and on behalf of every franchisee, One major part in this is the Fastway "Running Man" which is an integral part of the imagery and also has his own Kids Club, which is used in both the internal and the external marketing. A number of forum posts critical of the Fastway business model have appeared on the internet and subsequently been removed by the forum moderators due to aggressive legal threats from fastway.
