Md. Farhanul Islam Bhuiyan (Bengali: মো. ফারহানুল ইসলাম ভূঁইয়া; 12 September 2006 – 18 July 2024), better known as Farhan Faiyaaz (Bengali: ফারহান ফাইয়াজ), was a Bangladeshi student activist who was shot dead in 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement on 18 July 2024. The news of his death caused a significant uproar on social media, further intensifying the movement.
Personal life
[edit]Farhan was born on 12 September 2006. Previously, he used to live at Japan Garden City, a housing development in Mohammadpur. Later, he shifted to Kakrail, Ramna months before his death.[1]
He used to read at Dhaka Residential Model College since 2015 from 3rd grade, from where he was scheduled to sit for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams in 2025.[2]
2024 quota reform movement and death
[edit]Faiyaaz was actively involved with the quota reform protests. He also encouraged his ninth-grade sister Farin to join the protests.[citation needed]
During the first day of the Complete Shutdown on 18 July 2024, he participated the protests with his friends at Dhanmondi area. When they reached Dhanmondi, they found themselves caught in clashes between protesting students and police, as well as armed cadres from the Awami League. Around 2.00 p.m. (BST), a bullet was shot that pierced through his heart. He has suffered a significant blood loss while getting transported to City Hospital, the nearest possible hospital to the incident. He was taken to immediate ICU, but died soon.[3][4][5] Faiyaaz was the youngest protester to died till then.
Reaction
[edit]Following Faiyaaz's death, a distant relative, Nazia Khan, posted on Facebook demanding justice for his killing, which quickly sparked widespread outrage across the country. This uproar intensified further when his teachers, Munzereen Shahid and Ayman Sadiq, also posted demanding justice. The movement erupted in anger, igniting activism and public sentiment throughout the country. His death became a catalyst for a renewed wave of protests.[6]
Legacy
[edit]Farhan's Facebook bio became popular after his death, which was one of the lyrics of the song "The Nights":[1]
One day, you'll leave this world behind. So live a life you will remember.
On 6 August 2024, in honour of Farhan Faiyaaz, the street near Dhaka Residential Model College was renamed to "Shaheed Farhan Road".[7]
