Faridi

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Fareedi)

The Fareedi (or Faridi) clan belongs to the Farooqi tribe, named after Farīduddīn Mas'ūd Ganjshakar, a distinguished Sufi saint and disciple of Khwaja Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA), a revered figure in the Chishti Sufi order. This order was established by Hazrat Khwaja Usman Harooni of Greater Khorasan, the spiritual guide of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (Gareeb Nawaz).

Baba Farid, a direct descendant of the second caliph of Islam, Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA), has descendants spread across India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Notably, the Paigah family of Hyderabad traces its lineage to him. [House of Paigah] Baba Farid's association with Badaun's Sheikhupur and Nizamuddin Auliya's connection to Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, have influenced the settlement of many descendants of Baba Farid in Badaun. Over generations, they became prominent in the region through mansabs and jagirdaris granted by Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

How Come Descendents of Baba Farid get Settled in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun?

[edit]

Descent from Fariduddin Ganjshakar, It was established that Shaikh Farid was a great-grandson of Shaikh Salim Chisti. Shaikh Salim Chisti was a prominent Sufi saint of the Chishti order, and he was himself a descendant of Fariduddin Ganjshakar (also known as Baba Farid), a major figure in the Chishti lineage.  Therefore, Shaikh Farid was a descendant of Fariduddin Ganjshakar through Shaikh Salim Chisti.

Relationship with Jahangir: The crucial link between Shaikh Farid's family and Jahangir was the fact that Shaikh Salim Chisti's daughter served as Jahangir's (Prince Salim's) foster mother. In Mughal custom, this created a strong bond of foster brotherhood between her son, Qutubuddin (Shaikh Farid's father), and Jahangir. This fostered relationship was a significant factor in the family's rise in prominence.

Acquisition of Lands in Badaun: The text states that Shaikh Farid was appointed Hakim (governor) of Badaun in 1621 [Nawab Farid]. This appointment, which effectively granted him control over the region, was a direct result of Jahangir's favor towards the family due to the foster relationship. The images do not explicitly say that the lands were given as a grant, but the appointment as Hakim implies administrative control and likely revenue collection from the region, effectively placing the area under their influence. In essence, the family's connection to Jahangir through the foster relationship with his foster mother was the key to their rise in status and influence, including Shaikh Farid's appointment in Badaun [Information Collected from the book titled 'Nawab Farid' by Sultan Haider Josh][1].

The family's connection to Badaun continued for centuries, as evidenced by the fact that even today, some descendants of Baba Farid reside in their ancestral property in Mohalla Shahbazpur, where they maintained a significant hold on more than half of Badaun's fertile land until the early 21st century, notably through descendants like Hifzur Razzaq Faridi and his sons. This enduring presence in Badaun underscores the lasting impact of the family's historical connection to the region, initially established through royal patronage during Jahangir's reign.
