Honor & It's History

Honor is a dynamic and relational concept. An individual can think of himself or herself as honorable based on his or her belief that she embodies the qualifications that a group values as "honorable". Honor could be attached to a person from birth or grants bestowed by people of higher status and power. A person's parental lineage became a starting point for a person's honor. David A. DeSilva states in his book Honor, Patronage, Kinship & Purity quoted Ben Sira "A person's honor comes from his father." (28)

Gender Roles

In the ancient world, women and men have different roles for the preservation of honor and different standards for honorable activity. Men take on an honorable role outside of the home in public while women are told to maintain their honor within the privacy of their home. When out in public, women are told to avoid conversations with other men. They should only visit places frequented by women and become an "extension of 'private' space".

Reasoning for the designation of women to private and/or nonmale areas comes from the ancient tradition of a woman's place in the world. Women are not seen as independent individuals, but rather extensions of their male counterparts' identity and honor. (33)

Group Values

Focus on ancient people on honor and dishonor means that individuals were particularly oriented toward the approval and disapproval of others. Groups will use considerations of what honorable and shameful to reinforce these ideas of what behavior and goals should be pursued for the members. This discourages the members from any activities that may hinder the group's survival. In the event that the leader of the group promotes actions that do not appear honorable on a larger societal scale then the leader with offer some explanation as to their course of action leading to where honor lasts forever.
