Dulwich College Shanghai (DCS) is an international school catering for expatriate children from Toddler to Year 13 (aged 2 – 18 years old).
The academic programme is based on the English National Curriculum for England and Wales. The College offers the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in Years 10-11 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in Years 12 and 13.
In line with Dulwich College London, DCS is an academically-selective school. All prospective students must meet pre-determined standards and are required to sit an entrance exam prior to entering Year 3 – Year 13.
The language of instruction is English and the College is co-educational and non-denominational.
DCS was named third on Lifestyle Boutique's "Top 10 schools in the World", only below the prestigious schools American Embassy School and Eton College.
Student and teacher population
Over 42 nationalities are represented in the student body with 65% from the US, UK, Australasia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Teachers are recruited both internationally and locally, with a high percentage of teachers having trained in the UK.
Facilities
Located in the Jinqiao district in Pudong, DCS has a separate campus for children from Toddler to Year 2 called Dulwich College Kindergarten Shanghai (DUCKS), and a main campus which has separate Junior and Senior Schools.
Each school has its own library and ICT suites.

DCS has a House system for all of its students named after “Old Allenyians”, Dulwich College London alumni, and are called Anand, Howard, Shackleton, and Wing. Houses compete throughout the year in academics, sport, drama, music and other activities.

Shackleton
Shackleton house is name after the famous explorer, Ernest Shackleton, who is famous for his expedition to Antarctica in 1915. When his ship, the Endurance, was trapped in the polar ice, he led his men to shelter and then sailed out in an open boat to seek help. He returned to save his comrades two weeks later. His ship is on display at the Dulwich College London campus. The house's main colour is green. The founding Head of House was Mr. Mat Hekkelman.
Howard
The Howard house is named after Charles Howard. Charles Howard, 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham and 1st earl of Nottingham (c. 1536-1624) took advantage of his high birth to sustain a long and distinguished career. He served Queen Mary as Lord High Admiral and Queen Elizabeth as Lord Chamberlain. Charles Howard was the patron of Lord Howard’s Men, later known as The Admiral's Men, a theatre company in the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. Lord Howard’s Men were generally considered one of the most important acting troupes of English Renaissance theatre. Edward Alleyn, the founder of Dulwich College London is considered one of the greatest actors of Shakespeare's time was the principal actor for the troupe.
Charles Howard held supreme command of Naval Forces when the Armada was destroyed in 1588. In 1596, with Lord Essex, he stormed Cadiz to forestall another Armada. The following year he was created Earl of Nottingham and served as Lord High Steward until 1615. The house's main colour is red. The founding Head of House was Mr. Frank McGrath.
Anand
Anand house is name after Anand Panyarachun, a significant living Old Alleynian. Anand has had a distinguished career of service to his country and in business: he is a former Prime Minister of Thailand, Chairman of the Thai Federation of Industries, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Thai Ambassador to the U.S. and Chairman of Saha-Union Group. Born in 1932, Khun Anand is an alumnus of Dulwich College London, where he was School Prefect and captain of the undefeated 1951 School Tennis Team. The house's main colour is purple. The founding Head of House was Mr. Andre Casson
Affiliations and accreditations
The College is fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the National Centre for School Curriculum and Textbook Development (NCCT).
An IB World School; it acts as an Edexcel, SAT, Trinity College Music and Cambridge University test centre. It is also a member of the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS), and the Federation of British International Schools of South East Asia (FOBISSEA)
It continues to be affiliated with Dulwich College London.

History and international context
Dulwich College is a private academic institution that originated in London in 1619. In 2003, Dulwich College London allowed a franchise to open Dulwich College Kindergarten in the Jin Qiao area of Pudong, Shanghai. By 2004 new premises nearby were completed which allowed the opening of the college proper up to Year 9. The Official Opening Ceremony was held on Friday 22 October 2004 in the school gymnasium. On 14 June 2005 there was a ground breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of Phase 2 of the school. These subsequent additions in the form of another more modern campus on adjoining land allowed the eventual expansion to Year 13 - the first cohort graduating from the International Baccalaureate Program in 2009.
The founding master (head) of the school was Dr. Colin Niven. The first master of the expanded college was Mr. John Taylor (2004), followed by the return of Dr. Colin Niven (2005), Dr. Edward Groughan (2005), Mr. Ralph Mainard (2006), Mr. Stuart Bryan (2006–2008) with the current master being Mr. Paul Friend (2009–present).
DCS was the first of three Dulwich Colleges in China. It maintains a close relationship with Dulwich College London and its sister schools in Beijing and Suzhou. In August 2010, Dulwich College Seoul opened.
