Maharana Vishvaraj Singh Mewar (born 18 May 1969) is an Indian politician and 77th Maharana of Mewar. He is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party and was elected as MLA from Nathdwara constituency. He defeated incumbent C.P. Joshi, five-term incumbent MLA and former Speaker of the Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha.[1][2][3][4][5]

This is his electoral debut and re-entry of the Mewar royal family into Bharatiya Janata Party after 3 decades.[6][7][8][9][10][11] His entry in Bharatiya Janata Party is attributed to Diya Kumari, member of Jaipur royal family and Member of Parliament, Rajsamand.[1][12]

He had written to PM Narendra Modi and the CBFC in 2017 to stop the release of Bhansali's Padmaavat movie to prevent inaccurate portrayal of history and hurting of public sentiments.[13][14] He had also written to the PM, S Jaishankar (Minister of External Affairs), and G Kishan Reddy (Minister for Tourism) with respect to the consent not being taken for their disputed property being used in G20 Summit.[15][16]

Royal and political legacy

[edit]

His father, Mahendra Singh Mewar, also did his electoral debut from the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections. He then moved to Indian National Congress and lost the 1991 Lok Sabha elections contesting from Chittorgarh and then lost again in 1996 Lok Sabha elections whilst contesting from Bhilwara.

His maternal grandfather Manabendra Shah, was an eight-time Member of Parliament from Tehri Garhwal and also a member of Bharatiya Janata Party.[17][18]

He is the grandson of Bhagwat Singh of Mewar, the last Maharana of Mewar[6] and also a great descendant of Rajput warrior Maharana Pratap born in the house of Sisodia.[19][20]

His father Mahendra and his uncle Arvind both are claiming to being the next i.e. 76th custodian (Maharana) of the House of Mewar. The matter is currently sub judice.[16] The Royal Family of Udaipur (Maharanas) are not direct rulers rather they are considered as custodians (caretaker) of the Mewar kingdom on behalf of Shri Eklingji (Lord Shiva).[21]

Personal life

[edit]

He is married to Mahima Kumari, a royal family member and the daughter of Vidya Devi of Bandhi Talukdari (Madhya Pradesh) and Jagdishwari Prasad Singh Deo of Panchkote.[22] She also supports him in canvassing.[1] They have two children, one daughter named Baisa Jayati Kumari and a son named Devajaditya Singh.[23]

He did his schooling from Ajmer and went to Mumbai for completing college studies and settled there in Mewar House. He has been visiting Udaipur frequently.[24]
