Prof. Dr. Dr. Vânia Gomes Zuin Zeidler (*13 April 1971 in Brazil) is a Full Professor of Sustainable Chemistry of Renewable Organic Resources at the Institute of Sustainable Chemistry at Leuphana University of Lüneburg (Germany). She currently is the Pro-Dean of Gender and Diversity, the Coordinator of the Master's Program "Sustainability Science: Resources, Materials and Chemistry (M.Sc.)", and the Chair of the PhD Committee (Dr. rer. nat.) at the Faculty of Sustainability. Before joining Leuphana University, Prof. Zuin Zeidler was a Professor at the Department of Chemistry at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), Brazil (2017-2023), and a Visiting Professor at the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence, University of York, UK (2013-2023). Her earlier academic positions include Adjunct Professor at UFSCar (2008-2017) and various research fellowships at prestigious institutions such as the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (Germany), University of São Paulo (USP), and State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil. Prof. Zuin Zeidler’s research focuses on Green and Sustainable Analytical Chemistry and Chemistry Education, with a strong emphasis on the development of innovative analytical methods for the extraction and analysis of bioactive organic compounds from agro-industrial residues. Her expertise spans environmental and renewable sciences, particularly in Green Chemistry, and her work incorporates a critical approach to chemical education through the lenses of Curriculum Environmentalization and the Science, Technology, Society and Environment (STS/E) framework. She was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and has Spanish (Andalucia and Granada) and Portuguese (Madeira Island) roots.

Master’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry (1994-1997), University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. Her research focused on the determination of pentachlorophenol and hexachlorobenzene in natural subsurface waters from areas impacted by organochlorine residues.

PhD in Analytical Chemistry (1997-2001), University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. Her dissertation, entitled “Development of environmentally friendly analytical methods for the determination of pesticides in Brazilian medicinal plants”, included a research internship at the Department of Drug Science and Technology, University of Turin (UNITO), Italy.

PhD in Education (2006-2010), University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. Her research focused on the inclusion of the environmental dimension in the initial training of chemistry teachers, culminating in the dissertation “The inclusion of the environmental dimension in the initial training of chemistry teachers: a case study.”

Academic Career

Prof. Dr. Dr. Zuin Zeidler is currently a Full Professor of Sustainable Chemistry of Renewable Organic Resources at the Institute of Sustainable Chemistry, Leuphana University, Germany (since 2022). Previously, she held the position of Professor at the Department of Chemistry at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), Brazil, from 2008 to 2023, and was a Visiting Professor at the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence, University of York, UK, from 2013 to 2023. In addition to her academic positions, Prof. Zuin Zeidler has played a key role in advancing Green Chemistry through her leadership in various scientific organizations. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the IUPAC Interdivisional Committee on Green Chemistry for Sustainable Development since 2017 and has been involved with the Subcommittee on Green Chemistry since 2012. She also co-founded and coordinated the Green Chemistry Section of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ) and was President of the Humboldt Club of Brazil from 2015 to 2017, where she continues as a board member. She has been acting as member of committees and consultant e.g., International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3), UNESCO, UNIDO, United Nations Environment Programme, Beyond Benign, American Chemical Society (ACS), among others. Prof. Zuin Zeidler is author of several publications (such as Science, Nature Reviews Chemistry, Nature Reviews Materials, ACS book series) and has been invited to give several plenary and keynote lectures, e.g., European Parliament; ACS National Meetings; Green and Sustainable Chemistry Conferences; RSC Faraday Discussion; IUPAC World Chemistry Congress and International Conference on Green Chemistry; SBQ Annual Meeting; International Conference on Renewable Resources & Biorefineries; China International Conference on Sustainable Technology & Development; SENAI; EuChemS-DAC Sample Preparation. In 2020, she founded the Field & Food Tech Hub at UFSCar (Brazil), a research, development, and innovation platform aimed at promoting excellence in green technologies and sustainability across agro-industrial sectors, from farm to fork. Prof. Zuin Zeidler is also an editor and reviewer, currently acting as an Associate Editor of the journal Sustainability & Circularity Now and member of several editorial boards, including ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, Green Chemistry (RSC), Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry (Elsevier).
