Trust is a Berlin-based cultural organization established in 2017.[1] It operates as a physical workspace and online community.[2] Research has documented its approaches to community building and knowledge sharing through digital platforms, described as "communal digital gardening".[3]

History

[edit]

Trust was established in Berlin in 2017 by Calum Bowden and Arthur Röing Baer, alumni of the Strelka Institute.[4] The organization has established a platform for discussion and experimentation with new technologies like blockchain and AI.[5][6][7]

Structure

[edit]

Physical Space

[edit]

Trust maintains a workspace in Schöneberg, Berlin,[8] that houses a branch of the Cybernetics Library, also located at Prime Produce in New York City.[9] Their space serves as a venue for events, residencies, and research groups.[10][11]

Online Community

[edit]

The organization maintains a membership-based digital platform with community moderation systems.[12] Programming includes online discussions and presentations.[13]

Activities

[edit]

Trust hosts public events and research initiatives.[14] The organization has developed technical tools for collective decision-making, including Cygnet, a platform implementing quadratic voting for funding allocation documented by Waag.[15] In 2020, Trust received the Award for Art Project Spaces and Initiatives from the Senate of Berlin.[16]

Projects

[edit]
  • Flowertokens (2018): An installation by the media art collective terra0 that connected blockchain technology with plant cultivation.[17]
  • Hivemind (2022): A Serpentine Galleries commission investigating game mechanics and knowledge sharing.[18]
  • Half Earth Socialism (2022): A climate planning simulation game based on the book with the same title by Drew Pendergrass and Troy Vettese.[19][20]
