Pakistan faces many road accidents and traffic issues for each year. The country has one of the highest rates of road accidents in the world. Every year in Pakistan, thousands of people lose their lives due to traffic accidents and many face severe injuries.[2] In 2021 alone, 10,379 road accidents occurred which resulted in some 5,608 deaths.[3] According to former Minister of Communications Murad Saeed "In Pakistan, A peron is killed or severly injured in a road accident every five minutes” [4] Pakistan was also ranked first in Asia for most deaths caused by traffic accidents.[5][6] Furthermore the metropolitan city of Karachi also ranked 4th among the cities with the highest road accident fatalities in the world.[5][7] The major causes of these traffic accidents include Reckless driving, poor conditions of roads, and inadequate traffic management.

Economic Cost
[edit]A study done by the Asian Development Bank estimated that Road accidents in Pakistan caused $5.4 billion in losses in 2015 alone.[15] According to a Report of Ministry of Communications in 2018, Pakistan is wasting about $9 billion dollars every year due to Road Traffic Accidents.[16]
Contributing factors
[edit]The Main reason of Road traffic injuries is irresponsible road behaviors such as Jaywalking, Ignoring the speed limit, breaking the signal and riding on wet roads.Another major reason is poor condition of roads which lead to moderate to severe injuries. Many roads in the country are extremely poorly maintained, with potholes and cracks which makes driving dangerous. Many roads also lack proper lighting, making it difficult for drivers to see properly at night.[17]
Road Safety Measures
[edit]National Road Safety Strategy (2018-2030)
[edit]The Ministry of Communication in collaboration with Asian Development Bank (ADB) and UK Department for International Development launched “The Pakistan National Road Safety Strategy (2018-2030)”, which builts on the foundation of the first National Road Safety Plan for Motorways and National Highways (2017-2018) and broadens the scope to address all types of road networks and all road user groups in Pakistan.[18][4] The Strategy sets priorities for the development of new initiatives to save more than 6,000 lives by 2030. To guide its implementation, a series of action plans, consistent with the government planning cycle, will be developed, commencing with National Road Safety Action Plan (2020-2024). Each action plan will address road safety trends, emerging issues and priorities, and provide detailed actions to be undertaken.[19]
National Road Safety Action Plan (2020-2024)
[edit]The action plan is one of the two national plans that will be carried out to support Pakistan’s National Road Safety Strategy (2018-2030). The Action Plan was developed in collaboration with Asian Development Bank (ADB) and all federal and provincial government agencies responsible for transport, Road safety, Traffic enforcement and Post-crash response. The Action Plan was supported and endorsed by the 4th meeting of the National Steering Committee for Road Safety Actions in Pakistan which was held on 26th February 2020.[20]
