[edit]Hegna was born in Glenwood, Minnesota. Raised in a middle-class family, his parents were both educators, and he developed an early work ethic through activities such as paper routes and sports. He attended North Dakota State University on an Army ROTC scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, business administration, and German. He then joined the United States Army and served for over 22 years, including both active duty and reserve service, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2006. During his military career, he held positions in Military Intelligence and Electronic Warfare, including Battalion Commander, and received commendations, such as the Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal.[3][4][5][6][7]
Hegna began his financial services career at MetLife in 1988, where he achieved success as an agent and qualified for the Million Dollar Roundtable in his first year. He later held roles such as National Marketing Manager for Variable Life and Managing Partner of MetLife's Chandler, Arizona office. In 1996, Hegna joined New York Life, and was later promoted to the position of First Vice President. He played a pivotal role in expanding the company's annuity and long-term care business before retiring in 2011.[7][8][9][10]
After leaving New York Life, Hegna established his own firm, tomhegna.com, focusing on retirement education and financial consulting. He has since trained over 300,000 financial professionals worldwide and authored books on retirement planning, including Paychecks and Playchecks: Retirement Solutions for Life, Retirement Income Masters: Secrets of the Pros, and Don’t Worry, Retire Happy: Seven Steps to Retirement Security. His PBS show, Don’t Worry, Retire Happy, aired in over 80 million homes, further establishing him as a thought leader in financial education.[11][12][13][14][15][16][excessive citations]
His work emphasizes strategies for managing financial risks in retirement, such as market volatility, inflation, and longevity. His work is featured on platforms like Fox Business and CNBC, and he has spoken at major events, including NAIFA, NAILBA, MDRT, and GAMA.[citation needed]
