Life Note

[edit]

Ponniah Pillai was born in 1888 in Pandanainallur to Kannusamy Pillai. His father worked as a dance teacher in Baroda. He is a descendant of the Thanjavur Four, namely Chinnaiya, Ponnayya, Sivananda and Vadivelu. He studied music, dance and mridangam for 15 years under his maternal uncle, dance teacher Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai.

Another of his uncles, Nallaiyaappa Pillai, took him to Chennai and made him sing in front of great artists. Through this, he became a famous artist. He received special training from Anantharama Bhagavathar of Palakkad for six months.[citation needed]

When his father Kannusamy Pillai returned from Baroda, Ponniah Pillai accompanied him to Thanjavur. There, he taught music, dance, and mridangam to many students along with his father. After his father's death, he became a professor of music at the Annamalai University, founded by Annamalai Chettiar in Chidambaram. He taught Carnatic music and mridangam to students. He composed many Swarajatis, Varnams, Keerthanams, and Thillanas and taught them to the students.

Ponniah Pillai's son K. P. Kittappa Pillai is a famous dance teacher.
