Tekka is the soundtrack album, composed by Ranajoy Bhattacharjee to the 2024 Bengali film of the same name, directed by Srijit Mukherji starring Dev, Swastika Mukherjee, Rukmini Maitra, Paran Bandopadhyay and Aameya in lead roles. The film is produced by Gurupada Adhikari and Dev under the banners of Dev Entertainment Ventures.

The soundtrack features four songs, with lyrics penned by Kabir Suman, Barish and Bhattacharjee himself. The film score is composed by Diptarka Bose. The album preceds with four singles —"Tomay Chhere Jete Parlam Koi", "Taasher Deshe", "Tomay Chhere Jete Parlam Koi (Female Version)" and "Theme Jete Jete". The former three tracks are composed by Bhattacharjee himself, while the remained is a re-arranged version of Suman's own lyrical and composition.

Background

[edit]

When the collaboration between Dev and Srijit Mukherji was announced in August 2023, Anupam Roy was revealed to be the composer of the film, making it the eleventh of his frequent collaborations with Srijit Mukherji after Autograph (2010), Baishey Srabon (2011), Hemlock Society (2012), Chotushkone (2014), Zulfiqar (2016), Uma (2018), Shah Jahan Regency (2019), Vinci Da (2019), Dwitiyo Purush (2020) and Dawshom Awbotaar (2023). Despite the film's title revealation in December 2023, the pre-production of its music had been begun by Roy. In June 2024, Roy bade adieu to the project due to budget issues,[1] while he had already completed two tracks to be composed and the third one was in the process.[2] The same month, Ranajoy Bhattacharjee joined the team replacing Roy, in his maiden collaboration with Mukherji. Regarding his involvement with Mukherji, he said, "As tempting as it is to compose music for a Srijit Mukherji film, it is also difficult".[3]

Development

[edit]

In January 2024, several meetings of Mukherji and Bhattacharjee brought into a phrase titled, "Words destroy what I have to say". In an interview, on this album, the latter revealed that none of the songs in the film will be lip-synced by the actors. He also added that each song will be used in a specific context and to advance the story.

Kabir Suman, of whom Mukherji is a fan since his childhood and has been an inspiration for him to be a director, was requested by the latter to compose a track for the film, in their third collaboration after Jaatishwar (2014) and Padatik (2024).[4] While Suman declined to compose, but nodded to sing for the film. His own composition "Theme Jete Jete" from his 1995 album Ghumou Baundule, was suggested by him to Bhattacharjee for recreation in the film. Both Mukherji and Bhattacharjee agreed to his proposal and the song was thus re-arranged by the latter, with voice by Suman.

"The song was initially written as a love ballad, but Srijit da has brought out a range of emotions through its visual portrayal. It now conveys hope, a return to one’s roots and love. I’m thrilled to have my first Puja release with Srijit da and Dev da. Having Anupam da sing my composition is the icing on the cake."

— Ranajoy Bhattacharjee on his composition "Tomay Chhere Jete Parlam Koi" at Milennium Post

After is opting out of the film, Anupam Roy eagerly agreed to sing for the film at the request of Bhattacharjee. He lent his voice to the song "Tomay Chhere Jete Parlam Koi", also written by Bhattacharjee. Although not a composer, Roy took pride in being a special part of the film as a singer, saying, "Durga Puja and Srijit Mukherji complement each other. Even after so many project with him, singing for his film that will have a Puja-release is still a blessing for me." He also added that even though he would reunite with his friend-like Dev after a long time through the film and the song he had performed for the film would highlight the life of Dev's character in the film.

"Just as I had fallen passionately in love while doing group theatre at the age of 18, I had also tried unsuccessfully to cover up my bad mood with the guise of hard work while being tainted by that love. It was around that time when Srijit Da's Hemlock Society released, which brought me back on track in life.[...] After starting as a lyricist, I have often dreamt to work with Srijit Da. Fortunately, the dream came true in the film X=Prem and now, another step towards the dream has been built in Tekka.

— Barish on his second collaboration with Srijit Mukherji at Anandabazar Patrika

The remained track "Taasher Deshe" was written by Subrata Barishwala aka Barish, making his second collaboration with Srijit Mukherji after X=Prem (2022). In an interview to Anandabazar Patrika,[5] he broke the silence of his fan boy moment with both Mukherji and Dev. On his lyrical in the film, he revealed that the song would be an inspirational one, which addresses the core theme of the film. The song was revealed to be ironically meant and based on cards, on which the film's plot was slightly based.

Reception

[edit]

Piya Roy of T2 Online wrote "With its music and lyrics by Ranajoy Bhattacharjee and sung in the impassioned and emotive voice of Anupam Roy, Tomay chhere jete parlam koi sounds like the distraught outburst of a heartbroken lover who has tried in vain to move on from a failed relationship."[9] Agnivo Niyogi of The Telegraph reviewed the album and wrote "Tekka is a nerve-wracking hostage thriller, anchored by a nuanced performance from Dev in a de-glam avatar and obviously its songs."[10]

What is clear from the visuals accompanying the song is that all the characters have a troubled past from which they are trying their best to break free and which affects their current behaviour. It is also almost certain that they are not wholly unfamiliar with one another. The music video intrigues viewers and expands their curiosity regarding the relationships among the three main characters.
