History

[edit]

Richard Earl (R.E.) St. John was born in 1914 in Hunt, Texas, as the third child of Dock and Jenie St. John. A coach at Kilgore High School, he left that coaching in 1941 to fight the U.S. Navy during World War II. Tragically, he lost his life in November 1943 when the destroyer U.S.S. Borle sank in the Atlantic after a fierce battle with a German submarine, where he heroically attempted to rescue his fellow sailors. In honor of his sacrifice and the service of others, two plaques at the entrance of R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium commemorate the 118 local men who died during World War II from 1941 to 1945.[3]
