The Navy–Pittsburgh football rivalry is a college football rivalry game between the Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy and the Panthers of the University of Pittsburgh.[2][3]
History
[edit]The series between the two Mid-Atlantic universities located in bordering states dates back to the first meeting on October 26, 1912; a contest won by Navy by a score of 13–6.[4][5] The teams have intermittently throughout most of the history of the rivalry, but did meet every year from 1961 to 1979 and again from 1983 to 1989.[6][7] The 1976 game is notable because it was during that contest that star Pitt running back Tony Dorsett broke the NCAA career rushing record.[8][9] The teams last played in the 2015 Military Bowl which was won 44–28 by the Midshipmen.[10][11][12] As of August 2024, there are no future plans for the teams to meet again on the football field.
