Luna Snow, also known mononymously as Luna, is a superhero who appears in media produced by American comic book publisher Marvel Comics. The character first appeared in the video game Marvel Future Fight in 2018, and made her comic book debut in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1 in 2019. Luna Snow was created by Bill Rosemann and Danny Koo of Marvel Games, and Jee-Hyung Lee of Netmarble.[1][2]
The character's civilian identity is Seol Hee, a South Korean K-pop idol. She possesses ice-based superpowers, and is a member of the superhero team the Agents of Atlas. Luna Snow has appeared in a variety of additional media, including several promotional singles and music videos attributed to the character.[3][4][5][6]
Development
[edit]Concept and creation
[edit]The name Seol Hee translates to "snow" and "hope" in Korean.[7] The character first appeared as an original character in the 2015 video game Marvel Future Fight on January 24, 2018.[8] The South Korean mobile game developer Netmarble requested a character described as an "ice magician who could both heal and deal damage" for the game.[9] Seol Hee was also developed in response to fan requests for more culturally diverse characters. Marvel Games Executive Creative Director Bill Rosemann remarked on her introduction, emphasizing that Marvel's global fanbase deserves heroes who not only inspire their support but also resonate with them on a personal level.[10] Following her debut, Marvel Entertainment released several promotional singles for Luna Snow.[11] Seol Hee was later integrated into the Marvel Universe in 2019.[12] The character was originally created by Danny Koo, Bill Rosemann, and Jeehyung Lee.
Publication history
[edit]2010s
[edit]Seol Hee debuted in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1 (May 2019), created by Greg Pak and Gang Hyuk Lim.[13] She later appeared in the 2019 Agents of Atlas series,[14] and the 2019 Future Fight Firsts: Luna Snow one-shot, her first solo comic book.[15] According to Diamond Comic Distributors, it was the 140th best selling comic book in October 2019.[16]
2020s
[edit]Seol Hee appeared in the 2020 Atlantis Attacks series,[17] the 2022 Silk series.[18] the 2022 Marvel's Voices: Identity anthology series.[19] the 2022 Tiger Division series,[20] and the 2023 Spider-Gwen Annual one-shot.[21] She is one of 7 playable strategist characters in Marvel Rivals, released in 2024. She has a rare skin "Minty Beats" and a epic skin "Shining Star"
Fictional character biography
[edit]Seol Hee was raised by her grandmother following the deaths of her parents. As an aspiring singer, she aimed to support her family financially. She eventually pursued a career as an idol, performing under the stage name Luna.
During a live performance at Stark Arena, Seol Hee was taken hostage by the supervillain organization Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.), after she tried to protect the attendees of the event.[22] She was trapped within a malfunctioning cold fusion reactor.[23] While attempting to escape, she acquired ice-based superpowers and subsequently defeated the A.I.M. forces, adopting the identity of Luna Snow.[24]
Seol Hee fought with Crescent and White Fox against demons coming from Muspelheim.[25] She was initially captured by Sindr before Amadeus Cho rescued her.[26] She used her superpowers to prevent the North Pole's polar ice from melting with the help of Aero and Wave.[27] Seol Hee and the other Agent of Atlas later defeated Sindr.[28]
While in Tokyo, Seol Hee fought a group of wyverns after Mike Nguyen began merging various Asian cities within the city of Pan.[29]
Powers and abilities
[edit]Seol Hee possesses ice-based superpowers.[30] She can create ice structures of various forms, such as icicles and barriers, which she uses both to attack her enemies and to defend herself.[31] Her abilities notably allow her to generate dark ice with destructive effects and light ice with healing properties.[32] Furthermore, she is an accomplished singer and dancer.[24]
Reception
[edit]Critical response
[edit]Ollie Bradley of Screen Rant observed that the trend of integrating pop stars into the MCU, exemplified by Taylor Swift's wrongly rumored involvement in Deadpool 3 and Harry Styles' surprise appearance as Starfox in Eternals, made Luna Snow a prime candidate to be adapted for a live-action appearance. Bradley described Luna as a relatively new character who quickly gained popularity, bolstered by her real-life K-pop singles such as "Flow" and concluded that Luna Snow would be a fitting role for a real-life pop star.[33]
