From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jordan Andrew Topf (born October 5, 1990),[1] known professionally as Windser, is an American singer-songwriter and producer from Santa Cruz, California.[2] He is best known for his emotive, indie-rock sound and collaborations with artists such as Macklemore.[3]

Early life and education

[edit]

Topf grew up in Santa Cruz, California, where he picked up the guitar at the age of eight after his father introduced him to a tape of Jimi Hendrix.[4] Topf later moved to New York City to study music production at The City College of New York.[5] During this time, he formed the band Mainland and recorded their first demos in the college's studios.[6]

Career

[edit]

Mainland

[edit]

In 2013, Topf recorded the Shiner (EP) with Jim Eno of Spoon,[7] leading Mainland to sign with 300 Entertainment.[8] The band recorded at Sound City Studios and released the Outcast (EP), followed by several singles and EPs.[9] Mainland disbanded in 2019,[10] prompting Topf to focus on songwriting and production.

Solo as Windser

[edit]

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Topf retreated to a cabin in Northern California, where he began recording songs for his solo project under the moniker Windser.[11][12] His debut single, "July", was released on July 31, 2020.[3][13]

Topf gained further attention through his collaboration with Macklemore on the 2021 single, "Next Year", after Macklemore heard a vocal demo.[14] The two performed the track, along with Ryan Lewis, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[15] as well as Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.[16][unreliable source]

Notable releases

[edit]

Following his collaboration with Macklemore, Topf released his next single, "Memory", produced by Jackson Phillips (Day Wave). The song, written about the loss of a childhood friend, received regular airplay on SiriusXM's Alt Nation.[17] The track went on to spend eleven consecutive weeks (and twelve in total) on that chart, ultimately peaking at No. 5 and subsequently peaked at No. 33 on Alternative Radio.[18] Topf followed the success of "Memory" with tours supporting Alt-J,[19] Portugal. The Man,[20] and Cannons.[21]

In 2022, Topf collaborated again with Macklemore on the single, "Maniac", from Macklemore's third solo album Ben. The duo performed the track on Jimmy Kimmel Live!,[22][unreliable source] KEXP,[23] and at Fenway Park and BMO Stadium.[citation needed]

On October 28, 2022, he released his debut EP, Where the Redwoods Meet the Sea, via Bright Antenna Records.[24]
