History

[edit]

French pearl farmer Jacques Branellec and Filipino businessman Manuel Cojuangco founded Jewelmer in 1979.[1][7] Prior to founding Jewelmer, Branellec had served in the French Navy and worked as a commercial pilot, before farming black Tahitian pearls in French Polynesia.[8] He went on to partner with Cojuangco on a pearl farms in Palawan, which became the company Jewelmer.[8]

In 2006, Jewelmer established the Save Palawan Seas Foundation (SPSF), which formulates conservation strategies and introduces sustainable sources of livelihood for communities in Palawan.[9][10]

Jewelmer has participated in events such as the BaselWorld Watch and Jewelry Show[11][12]and the Dubai Pearl Tender.[13]

Since 2013, Jewelmer has also organized the Jewelmer Gala.[14]

In 2017, Jewelmer unveiled the Palawan Strand, it is a rare strand of golden South Sea pearl.[4][15] The strand was taken from the Pinctada maxima oyster and took 37 years to assemble.[4][15] In 2017, the company also provided the headpiece for Miss Universe Philippines title holder Maxine Medina's costume at the 65th Miss Universe pageant.[16]

At the 2018 Jewellery News Asia Awards in Hong Kong, Jewelmer received the Sustainability Initiative of the Year Award.[17]In the same year, Jewelmer opened its first U.S. store in Palm Beach, Florida.[18][19][20] The company was also the subject of the documentary film Power of Pearl: The Farm Beneath the Sea, which was directed by Ahbra Cale Perry and was released in 2018.[21][22]

Jewelmer developed the museum exhibit "Pearl of the Orient", which premiered at The Mind Museum in 2022.[23][24]

Jewelmer began providing the La Mer en Majesté crown for the Miss Universe Philippines pageant in 2022, which was worn by the year's eventual winner, Celeste Cortesi.[25][26] Jewelmer went on to provide the La Mer en Majesté Crown for the following year's Miss Universe Philippines pageant.[27][6]

In 2023, model Aliah Canillas wore a Jewelmer strand on the cover of the July 2023 issue of Vogue Philippines.[28][29]

In May 2024, Jewelmer opened a boutique in Nustar Resort Cebu's The Mall in Philippines.[30]

The process

[edit]

Jewelmer grows golden pearls and produces jewelry using them.[31][32] Some of its designs were created by craftsmen trained in techniques of  Place Vendome, Paris.[33][34][35] Jewelmer's farms are also located within a marine-protected, no-take zone.[36][37]
