After finishing schooling in 1869, he studied the history of Polish literature and law at Jagiellonian University.[1] On 25 July 1890, he began to attend the seminary in Saratov;[2][3] he was ordained on 19 March 1893.[1] He was later made a vicar of the cathedral in Saratow the same year.[2]

On 16 April 1901, Szembek was appointed Bishop of Płock;[4] he was consecrated on 30 April by Bolesław Hieronim Kłopotowski, with assistance from Antanas Baranauskas and Karol Antoni Niedziałkowski.[5] On 9 November 1903, he was appointed by Pius X as Archbishop of Mohilev.[6]
