Hymns—for Home and Church

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hymns—for Home and Church is the new hymnal for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expected to be released beginning in 2024 and fully released in 2026.[1]

Schedule

[edit]

The announcement that a new hymnal would be created by the church occurred on June 18, 2018.[2][3] More than 17,000 song suggestions were submitted in the first year.[4]

The LDS Church released the first batch of new music in late May 2024. Additional batches of new music will be released in the future, including Faith in Every Footstep by K. Newell Dayley, other music composed after the issuing of the 1985 Hymnal, music from other faiths, and a few of the melodies submitted as part of the process of creating the new hymnal.[5]

The Hymnal will be available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese by the end of 2026. Additional Languages are expected to follow.[5]

Characteristics of the new hymnal

[edit]

The new Hymnal is expected to have between 450 and 500 songs and include songs for both adults and children. It will also include revisions of old songs to make them more globally relevant, clarify doctrine, replace outdated language and ensure that the lyrics and musical styles are more relevant.[5]

National Hymns and anthems such as the Star Spangled Banner will not be included in the new hymnal.[6]
