Hwang Ye-ji (Korean황예지; born May 26, 2000), known mononymously as Yeji, is a South Korean singer and dancer. She is a member and leader of the South Korean girl group Itzy, formed by JYP Entertainment in 2019.[1][2]

Early life

[edit]

Yeji was born on May 26, 2000, in Seoul, South Korea, but she grew up in the southwestern city of Jeonju. She started dancing in fifth grade, but it wasn’t until eighth grade that she took dancing seriously. Yeji went back to Seoul in 2015 in order to follow her dream of becoming an artist.[3]

Career

[edit]

2015–2018: Pre-debut

[edit]

In December 2015, Yeji auditioned for JYP Entertainment, one of the songs that she auditioned with was Jessi's 2015 song "ssenunni".[4]She ended up joining the company as trainee the same year.[5]

Later in 2017, she appeared publicly for the first time as a guest on Stray Kids along her group mates.[6]

It wasn’t until 2018 when Yeji first rose to domestic fame in 2018 when she appeared on the South Korean competition show The Fan, where she ranked first on the South Korea search engine Naver.[7] Following her stint on the show, Junho of 2PM described her as "JYP's secret weapon". [8][9]

Yeji spent three years as a trainee, before debuting in 2019 as part of Itzy.[10][11]

2019–present: Debut with Itzy

[edit]

On February 12, 2019, Yeji made her debut in Itzy as leader and main dancer.[12] The group debuted with the single album It'z Different, led by the single "Dalla Dalla".[13]

On March 19, 2021, Yeji became the 5th artist/dancer to appear in the Studio Choom series Artist of The Month, covering River (Bishop Briggs song).[14][15] She earn one trophy by Studio Choom, 3 NYX awards, everything thanks to her versatility as she explored Jazz, Hip-Hop and Modern Dance styles in this performance.[16] [17][18]

In 2022, Yeji, along with Ryujin, participated on a remix of Bebe Rexha's 2022 single "Break My Heart Myself", released on July 29.[19][20]

In November 2023, Yeji, alongside bandmate Chaeryeong, appeared as mentors on the SBS reality survival series Universe Ticket.[21]

During early 2024, Yeji unveiled her solo debut track “Crown On My Head“ as part of ITZY’s BORNT TO BE album. The song was pick as one of the best Kpop B-Sides for the first half of 2024 by Genius Korea landing on the 8th spot.[22]

Artistry and Public Image

[edit]

Durning 2023, in an interview with WKorea, Yeji talked about her rookie years. How she has been able not get lost in the process of growth. While people tried to dictate her evolution by questioning her dancing style/technique; she knew to have found the key to keep herself afloat within industry. Yeji describes herself as ever-changing, someone who never stops learning, who is not set in one thing. A dancer who is versatile, strong, sharp, gentle, a mix of everything she enjoys and challenges herself with.[23]

Yeji’s detailed dancing skills have being acknowledged by performing/art schools in South Korea. Her name pops up along Jimin from BTS. Used as a model to motivate young talent as well as those chasing a masters in the performing arts field. They describe her as “a performer who can dance from her toes to the tip of her hairs”.[24]

Yeji is known for being one of the female idols who have "a cat-like appearance," which Harpers Bazaar describes her as the "standard" of a cat's eyes, "because of her slender face shape, eyes without double eyelids, and detailed features [that] make people think of an agile cat."[25][26] gaining the moniker of (Korean매력적 캣츠아이) (charming cat) in the South Korean media.[27][28][29][30]
