DreadClub: Vampire's Verdict is a 2024 American animated film directed by Hooroo Jackson, based on his novel Duchamps. The film was the first AI-generated animated feature film [1] [2] [3] [4] and the first AI anime feature film. It premiered on July 3, 2024 and was released on July 26, 2024 on Amazon Prime, becoming the first AI film to land a major streaming license, receiving a Blu-ray release on August 31, 2024.
Premise
[edit]Betty Gray, a college student obsessed with gothic romances, finds herself living one when she falls for Duchamps De Ve--a man on trial for being a vampire.
Production
[edit]Jackson produced the film for $400 between February and July 2024, utilizing groundbreaking AI technology for every aspect of production. The film was created using a fully automated AI pipeline that generated all visuals, character performances, sound design, musical score, and animation - marking a significant milestone in automated film production. The production process involved multiple AI models working in concert to handle everything from character design and environmental rendering to voice synthesis and musical composition. This innovative approach demonstrated the potential for AI to dramatically reduce traditional animation costs while maintaining creative control.
Release
[edit]Following its July 3, 2024 premiere, DreadClub: Vampire's Verdict garnered international recognition in several film festivals. The film won Best Animated Film at the Kraken International Film Festival [5] and Best Director at the Miami Street International Film Festival [6]. It was also featured at the AI Film Awards in Venice and the Burano Film Festival. But significant controversy followed across social media, leading to the film being permanently banned from Letterboxd for its use of AI.
Book Release
[edit]Jackson documented the entire production in Artificial Imagination: The Making of "DreadClub", the First A.I. Animated Feature Film (2024). The book presents his complete dialogue with AI models like GPT and Claude AI during the six-month production of DreadClub, offering insight into the technical challenges of creating the first fully AI-generated animated feature film, the film's promotion process, and various industry responses to the production as well as its significant controversies.[7]
Reception
[edit]Rotten Tomatoes reports that three out of four surveyed critics gave the film a positive review, with particular praise for its innovative approach to AI filmmaking and unique visual style. Martin Carr wrote, "DreadClub: Vampire's Verdict is an animated A.I. feature film that takes movie making to another level. Writer-director Hooroo Jackson has fashioned something unique with this Gothic horror romance, that not only feels cinematic, but proves to be truly engaging."[8] Bobby LePire of Film Threat praised the film's pioneering accomplishment, writing, "This is an intriguing first step into the potential of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. More importantly, it highlights Jackson as a talented filmmaker with style."[9] Review critic Ron Paul commended the film's storytelling elements, noting, "On the whole, the viewer is assured of an engaging pageant of myth, mystery and melodrama."[10] However, William Schwartz of Book and Film Globe criticized its pacing, observing that "the characters never, ever, stop talking."[11]
