Derek Mount is an American musician, composer, and producer, best known as the former guitarist for the Christian crunk-rock band Family Force 5. After leaving the band in 2017, he founded multiple projects, including the cinematic instrumental project Brique a Braq and the pop/rock duo Club Danger. He is also part of the writing/production duo Vyceroy. Mount has collaborated with artists like Chris Bartels, Shawn Williams, and Vo Williams, and his work has been featured in films, TV shows, commercials, and video games.[1][2]

Early Life and Career

Derek Mount, also known by his stage name Chapstique, is a multi-instrumentalist from Atlanta, Georgia. He gained prominence as a member of the Christian rock band Family Force 5 in 2005, contributing to the band's high-energy performances and albums. During his time with Family Force 5, Mount was a driving creative force behind hits like Dance or Die and Business Up Front, Party in the Back.[3]

In 2017, after 11 years with the band, Mount announced his departure to pursue other musical endeavors, including composition and production work for film, television, and commercials.[4]

Club Danger

Mount also co-founded the pop/rock duo Club Danger with producer Riley Friesen. The duo's music has been featured in various media outlets, including Fox's promotional campaign for Lethal Weapon, and the FIFA video game series.[5]

Club Danger has collaborated with artist and songwriter Sam Tinnesz on multiple projects. One notable track is "Going All In," which merges Sam's vocal style with the duo's high-energy production. Additionally, they worked together on a remix of Tinnesz's track "Bloodshot." Their collaboration has contributed to Club Danger's ongoing success in media placements and streaming platforms.[6][7]

One notable collaboration within Club Danger is with Vo Williams on the track "Primal." The song blends aggressive hip-hop with rock elements and showcases Mount's guitar work alongside Vo Williams' powerful vocals. "Primal" has been featured in media placements, including video games and sports broadcasts.[8][9]

Brique a Braq

Brique a Braq is an instrumental project by Derek Mount, focusing on cinematic, atmospheric compositions. His music has been widely licensed for use in commercials, films, TV shows, and corporate presentations, with placements from major brands like Nokia, Target, and Subaru, as well as media from NBCUniversal and Lionsgate.[10]

A notable release is the Vis á Vis EP, a collection of six singles that were composed under a unique self-imposed framework. Each track was recorded early in the morning and reflects specific dates tied to their creation and release. The EP was praised for its ambient and experimental qualities, offering lush textures that evoke cinematic imagery.[11]

Brique a Braq's compositions have been featured in major sporting events, such as ESPN broadcasts, and in retail stores like Forever XXI, showcasing Mount's versatility in crafting music that connects with a wide audience across various media platforms.[12]

Vyceroy

Vyceroy is a pop/hip-hop writing and production duo composed of Derek Mount and Riley Friesen. The duo has created custom compositions for major film studios such as Disney, Lionsgate, and NBCUniversal. Their work has topped the charts, with multiple number-one hits and top-ten songs across various Billboard charts. Vyceroy's music is known for blending catchy pop melodies with innovative production, creating anthems suitable for both radio play and energetic events.[13][14]

One notable track, "Go to Work," was featured on The CW's Batwoman, highlighting Vyceroy's reach in mainstream media.[15] Additionally, their songs have been used in commercials for brands like Subaru, Nokia, and Target, as well as video games such as Tony Hawk Pro Skater and Rock Band.[16]

Production and Collaboration

Derek Mount has expanded his work as a producer and collaborator across various genres. In addition to his work with Vyceroy, he has collaborated with artists like Chris Bartels and Shawn Williams. In 2023, they released the track "Gentle Rain," blending experimental electronic and organic instrumentation.[17]

Mount has also contributed to songs like "Abbaye/Voix," a collaboration with Bartels that showcases his signature layered production style.[18][19]
