Anita la Mamma del Gelato (commonly known as Anita Gelato) is an international family-owned brand that manufactures gelato, frozen yogurt, sorbet, and raw materials for the ice cream market. Established in 2002 in Tel Aviv, Israel, the brand has grown into a multi-national network of more than 160 locations in Israel, United States, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Spain, Cyprus, and Puerto Rico.[1][2]

History

[edit]

Anita Gelato is named after Anita Avital, the mother of the brand's co-founders, Nir and Adi Avital.[1]

In the 1990s, Anita Avital, a single mother who lost her husband to a sudden illness, and Nir Avital, her youngest son, experimented with flavor combinations in their small family kitchen in Netanya, Israel. They shared their goods with neighbors, living in one of the more rundown sections of the city. In 1998, to support the family, Nir began selling their homemade gelato on weekends from a small cart at local food fairs.[3][4][5]

In 2002, older brother Adi Avital joined them and opened the family's first gelato shop in Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv. They soon expanded into several more Anita Gelato locations and, in 2012, launched the Golda Glida ice cream sub-brand, which has grown to be Israel's largest nationwide ice cream chain.[3][4][5]

In 2010, the family team opened its first manufacturing plant in Ra'anana, Israel, and in 2014 Anita Gelato went global, launching its first overseas shop in Sydney.[6] Several more shops were opened in Australia, and then in Spain, Cyprus, and Puerto Rico. The first USA location opened in 2020 in Manhattan's Upper East Side,[7] and later in Los Angeles, and Miami. The brand's UK location opened in London's West End in 2022.[8]

Operations and products

[edit]

Anita Gelato offers more than 170 flavor varieties, some of which are exclusive to the brand, such as Salted Pretzel Variegato, which combines pretzels with cashew and macadamia pastes, and Cookieman, made from hazelnut, meringue, caramel, mascarpone, and Campari.[9][10]
