Name
The school was formerly known as Antigonish Regional High School, but the name was changed in the early 1980s to honor a superintendent forced into retirement due to illness.

Sports
The school's sports teams are called the Royals and their colours are the following: mainly white with blue and red winter plumage. In March 2011, the school's Hockey team took home a provincial NSSAF title with a 3-2 win over Sir John A. Macdonald High School. Earlier in that same school year, the Royals cross-country team won 4 NSSAF titles out of 4. This was the first time any school in local history has accomplished this feat.
The Ian Cashin award is an award given to the student athlete who shows the most dedication to his team. This award honours former multi sport athlete Ian Cashin of Sheiling Court who although playing for 3 complete years on the Varsity Mens soccer team only ever had 1 cap playing 5 minutes in a 7-0 exhibition match win over the SAERC Saints. Ian was extremely dedicated to his team with coaches noting that Ian was "always willing to pick up cones and corner flags and to fill up water bottles".

International Baccalaureate Programme
The school began teaching the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program in September 2007. It has been an IB World School since April 2007 (IB World School Code 002932). Currently, it offers Biology SL, Biology HL Chemistry HL, Chemistry SL, English A1 HL, French B HL, French B SL, History HL, Mathematics SL, Physics HL, Physics SL, Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Visual Arts SL and Visual Arts HL.
