The Disney Channel Games is an olympic-based special miniseries that has aired in the summer months since 2006. The Disney Channel Games have recently finished their third year, and is produced by 7"8"9 Entertainment, located in Disney World, Florida. The 2008 games will air from July 27, 2008-August 30, 2008.

Premise

This takeoff on Battle of the Network Stars, takes Disney Channel stars and divides them into four teams (originally 3 in the 2006 games). Each week, selected members of each team compete against each other in obstacles and games. Depending on how well each team does, a certain number of points will be added to each team's score. 1st 200, 2nd 150, 3rd 100, 4th 75. While this is the primary way teams get points, fans can also play selected games on Disney Channel's official website and submit the points they earn to their favorite team. The team with the most points submitted in is given bonus points. Also, one week after each event, the Most Valuable Player MVP (who is voted upon by viewers online) is announced. After weeks of competition, the winning team is announced.

The Disney Channel Games airs on Saturday nights from 8pm-10pm ET/PT on Disney Channel during the summer seasons. The competitions are shown in between new episodes of four Disney Channel shows or one movie.

The Disney Channel Games 2006 were the first annual competitions. They began airing in the US on June 10, 2006, along with the So Hot Summer! 2006. It was later aired in the UK November 3, 2006, Australia on January 5, 2007, in Latin America on February 26, 2007, and in Canada on the Family Channel on June 19, 2007.

There were three teams: the Red Team, the Blue Team and the Green Team. The stars on the teams were from various Disney Channel Original Series and the Disney Channel Original Movies that would air that summer. Each member of the team was given a nickname and Brenda Song, Ashley Tisdale and Zac Efron acted as team captains. The events were hosted by Brian Stepanek and Phill Lewis (respectively, Arwin and Mr. Moseby from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody). Characters and their voices from the animated series acted as studio hosts. These included Christy Carlson Romano (Kim Possible), John DiMaggio (Dr. Drakken and Fu Dog), Dante Basco (Jake Long), J.P. Manoux (Kuzco) and Patrick Warburton (Kronk).

Concert Performances

Both the Opening and Closing ceremonies did not show any concert performences at the games, but both had an additional event during the ceremonies.

While the opening ceremonies for the 2006 Games premiered on June 10, 2006, the ceremony didn't air a concert performence, but the 1st event took place.

The closing ceremonies aired on August 19, 2006, thus also not having any concert performances, but the games aired the top 10 favorite moments in the ceremony, and declaring Blue Team the Winner of the games, awarded with a humongous trophy, while the losing teams are awarded medals for 2nd and 3rd.

Disney Channel Games 2007

The Second Annual Disney Channel Games are over as of 25th August 2007. As advertised, these have proven to be the biggest of them all. Hosted at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, stars from other nations' Disney Channels have joined the teams, making room for the new Yellow Team. In addition, each team is playing for a charity (including Boys & Girls Club, UNICEF, Make-a-Wish Foundation and Starlight Starbright Childrens Foundation. Disney also revealed the games becoming enviormentally friendly.

Contestants from the first edition who did not return for the second include Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Kay Panabaker, and Anneliese van der Pol. At the time, Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron were on vacation in Hawaii.[citation needed] Several new additions from new Disney Channel Original Series, Disney Channel Original Movies, and across the globe have joined the teams, including Maiara Walsh and Jason Dolley of Cory in the House. Each team member did not receive a nickname, although Brenda Song remained a captain, Dylan Sprouse, Kyle Massey, and Corbin Bleu took over for the other teams. Phill Lewis and Brian Stepanek returned as hosts while Cory in the House's Madison Pettis served as a guest judge on one occasion. Several animated characters are also seen in the audience of the games. They include Nancy Cartwright and Grey DeLisle (Todd and Riley), Dante Basco (Jake Long), John DiMaggio (Fu Dog and Dr. Drakken), Christy Carlson Romano (Kim Possible) and cheerleaders, and J.P. Manoux (Kuzco), among several others.

The Winning Team, The Green Team, won the competition and donated the $25,000 to the The Boys and Girls Club Of America. However, in a final, anticlimatic twist, Disney gave each team $25,000 too, resulting in all teams donating equal money for their charity.

Concert Performances

The opening ceremonies for the 2007 Games premiered on June 15, 2007 with concert performances by Corbin Bleu and Hannah Montana.

The closing ceremonies aired on August 25, 2007 with concert performances by The Cheetah Girls, The Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus, performing as herself and not as Hannah Montana for the first time.

A new DVD with all the concert performances will be released sometime in November.

Disney Channel Games 2008

The Disney Channel Games will return for Summer 2008. The games will be held in July 27 through August 30, 2008. Phill Lewis will not return to host Disney Channel Games 2008. Unlike the previous two games, the 2008 edition of the games will only feature 5 events.

Over 50 Disney Channel stars from around the globe convened at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida for "Disney Channel Games," featuring comical relay races, grand scale obstacle courses and all-out fun challenges in five special half-hour telecasts, "Disney Channel Games," to be presented each week beginning Sunday, July 27 (8:00 p.m. ET/PT) on Disney Channel. Hosted by funny-man Brian Stepanek ("The Suite Life of Zack & Cody"), the games are fun, colorful and larger than life, but the competition is real and the young competitors are determined to win the prize -- the Disney Channel Games Cup. The special telecasts are highlighted by a post-Games concert featuring performances by Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, The Cheetah Girls, Demi Lovato and Jordan Pruitt.

The event, filmed at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, benefits four children's charities: Make-A-Wish Foundation, Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation, UNICEF and Boys & Girls Club of America.

Each of the four subsequent "Disney Channel Games" 2008 special telecasts will be presented Saturdays (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) through August 30. The 27 Disney Channels worldwide will air the five special telecasts thereafter with local Disney Channel stars hosting their country's telecast.

The "Inside Track," exclusively on www.disneychannelgames.com, hosted by Meaghan Jette Martin ("Camp Rock") and Cody Linley ("Hannah Montana"), goes behind the scenes of "Disney Channel Games" 2008. DisneyChannel.com users can vote for their favorite players and dive into the action via online versions of the "Disney Channel Games" seen each week.
