In January 2024, during a speech at the Parliament of Malta about the Sports Governance and Integrity Act, Agius called out the lack of accountability for corruption cases within Maltese football, stating that "in Malta, people know who is going to win before the game is even played, and it's almost sure who will win the league this year".[2][3] Agius's statements received criticism from the Malta Football Association, which considered some of his claims to be "nothing short of a slap in the face for all those athletes, volunteers, and most of all fans".[3][4]
