Chaparral High School is a public high school located in Scottsdale, Arizona, United States. The mascot is the firebird and the school colors are scarlet red and gold.[1] The high school was built back in 1958 by Aaron Fox of Fox Construction and School Design. Chaparral is based on the percentage of students passing or exceeding the AIMS, Chaparral is one of the best high schools in the state. In 2006, Chaparral had the state's highest percentage of students exceeding reading standards, and the fourth highest percentage of students exceeding math and writing standards.

Student body and academics

Chaparral has one of the highest graduation rates in the state, with a 98% graduation rate, significantly higher than the 80% state average. Over 95 percent of Chaparral's graduates enroll in higher education, the most of any highschool in Arizona.[2] Chaparral High School has consistently ranked in Newsweek's list of Best High Schools in America, and in 2007 Chaparral was one of only 12 schools ranked in Arizona.[3] The high school also usually garners more National Merit Semifinalists annually than any other school in the state and holds the state record for having the most scholars in one year (24 in 2000).[2] Additionally, the school has also earned the record most in-state Presidential Scholars in Arizona with 17 in 2003.

Chaparral is the only school in Arizona to have students win the highest honors at the Siemens Westinghouse Competition and Intel Science Talent Search, two of the most prestigious science competitions in the U.S.[4]

Athletics

Chaparral competes in 19 interscholastic sports and leads the 5A Division II in a number of sports programs. The school has historically been best known for its baseball program, annually ranked in USA Today's Super 25 High School Baseball Team list.[5] Jerry Dawson is the only baseball coach in school history and has more than 700 victories to go along with eight state championships. Chaparral also has made the final four of the state tournament on 13 occasions in addition to winning 24 regional championships (the last 17 in a row). Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox and Brian Bannister of the Kansas City Royals both played under Dawson at Chaparral, along with Ike Davis, an All-American at Arizona State University and the first-round draft pick of the New York Mets in 2008. More than 130 players at Chaparral have gone on to play professional or college baseball. Chaparral players have taken the field for Division I universities that include the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Pepperdine, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California, UCLA, Stanford, Kansas, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, the University of San Diego, Baylor, Auburn, Wofford, Houston, Georgia Tech, Loyola Marymount, Nebraska and many others. In football, Chaparral has won three state championships, including back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000 with teams that went 28-0. Lyle Sendlein, the starting center for the Arizona Cardinals in the 2009 Super Bowl, played linebacker on both of those teams, before joining older brother Austin at the University of Texas. Charlie Ragle is the head football coach, succeeding Ron Estabrook, who built the program and won more than 120 games in 12 seasons. The Firebirds lost to rival Scottsdale Saguaro High School in the 2008 4A-I state championship game played at Sun Devil Stadium by a score of 38-0. Ragle previously coached defensive line at Arizona State until Dirk Koetter and much of the staff was released.

Chaparral recently had a brand new, state-of-the-art artificial turf football field installed and constructed a modern field house, which includes a weight room, trainer's office and coaches headquarters and was financed by program supporters. The field is one of the first high school fields of its kind in the greater Phoenix area and is used also by the soccer program and the Chaparral Lacrosse Club. The football team's website can be found at www.chaparralfootball.com

Arts

Chaparral has three concert choirs, and a Mixed Jazz group (a co-ed group which perform jazz standards) and a Nothing But Treble group (an all girls group which often will sing songs that somebody in the group has arranged or written, or will perform already written music) which rehearse on their own time to put together performances.[citation needed]

Chaparral also has two concert bands, a marching band, jazz band, as well as various ensemble groups.

Chaparral takes pride in its two Orchestras, Symphonic and Concert.

Chaparral is home to Thespian Troupe #203. It is known for the high quality of its successful performances [citation needed]including 2 mainstage productions, a musical and Student Productions each year.

Construction & Remodeling

Founded in 1973, the school needed renovation. The rebuilding of the school started early August 2006, and the entire reconstruction of the school was planned to be finished August 2008, before the 2008-2009 school year. Due to the delay of demolishing the last (200) building, the school finally finished its last parking lot in late October 2008.
