The history of CEFET/RJ

In Brazil, the Federal Centers of Technical Education reflect an evolution of a kind of educational institution that in the 20th century helped to develop the industrialization of the country.

The history of these centers is connected to the origin of professional education in Brazil going back to 1909 when President Nilo Peçanha mandated the creation of the apprenticeship Schools in every Brazilian state capital, having the goal to deliver free elementary and professional education.

Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian capital until 1960, the institution we know as CEFET/RJ started in 1917 as the Escola Normal de Artes e Ofícios Wenceslau Brás, when the capital administration was mandated to train teachers and masters for professional education. Upon moving under the Federal Government jurisdiction in 1919 and after the reformulation of the Ministry of Education in 1937, the school became part of the network of professionalizing schools maintained by the Federal Government.

The school has also been known as: Escola Tecnica Nacional, Escola Tecnica Federal da Guanabara (1965), Escola Tecnica Federal Celso Suckow da Fonseca (in 1967, as a posthumous homage to its first director). It became Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica in June 30th, 1978.
