Central Union High School CUHS is a high school in El Centro, California serves 1,750 students. In 2007 it was named a California Distinguished School.

History

The school was established in 1908 and celebrated 100 years in 2008.

The school was originally located on State and 9th Street in El Centro. In 1913, it was moved to its current site on Brighton Avenue. The City Courthouse now occupies the original school building. In its first year, only 12 students attended the school. Over the years, it has grown to a student body of over 1,750.

Academics

The school offers a wide range of academic courses including AP and Honors classes.

Central offers students many academic extracurricular activities as well. The school has a MESA Robotics club and a Rocket Club that competes yearly against other schools. In 2008 the Robotics Club traveled to a competition in Hawaii. The Mock Trial Team also competes against local schools. Central also has two community service clubs, a Mexican-American club, a drama club, a French club, a Science Fair club, and an AVID club.

Central's Academic Decathlon team has won the Imperial County Competition every year since 1981. It has competed in the State Competition in Sacramento, CA since 1981 where they have consistently done well.

Athletics

CUHS competes in the Imperial Valley League in the California Interscholastic Federation San Diego Section.

The Great Spartan Band

The Great Spartan Band regularly performs at all home football games. The band also performs in local events and parades in Imperial and San Diego counties. Central also has an award-winning jazz band and also has a wind ensemble.

Bands from Central High have performed in many places and received many awards and honors from the Orange Coast College Jazz Festivals, El Centro Navy Base Jazz Festival, Southwestern College Jazz Festival, Imperial Valley College Jazz Festival, USC Concert of the Bands, UCLA Band Festival, Holiday Bowl Music Festivals, Columbus Day Parade, Mother Goose Parade, and the Disneyland Parades and concerts in 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1987.

Under the direction of Jimmie Cannon from 1966-1996, the Great Spartan Band began traveling extensively and grew in popularity and talent. In 1972, the band performed in Mexico City, where they were honored by the Mexican President, Luis Echeverría. The band traveled four times to perform in Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans (most recently in 2008), and also traveled twice to Hawaii. The band also traveled to Disney World in Florida in 1995, where they participated in the Magic Kingdom Easter Parade.

The Great Spartan Band continues to excel and has been invited by Congressman Bob Filner (California's 51st District) to participate in the 2010 Memorial Day Parade in Washington, DC.
