Burlesque: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is a soundtrack album by Christina Aguilera and Cher from the film of the same name. It was released on November 22, 2010 by RCA Records.[1] The first buzz single from the soundtrack "Express" was released on November 19, 2010.[2] The other two singles from the album are "Show Me How You Burlesque", and "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me". The album features ten tracks, with eight done by Aguilera and two by Cher, which are Cher's first original recordings in seven years.[3][4] The album was met with positive reviews from critics with many praising Cher’s return to music with the track You Haven't Seen the Last of Me.[5][6][7] Diane Warren won a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for Cher's "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me", while Christina Aguilera's "Bound to You" was nominated in the same category too.
Background
It was confirmed after Christina Aguilera had completed work on her sixth studio album Bionic that she had invited Tricky Stewart to start work on the soundtrack album to accompany the film Burlesque. Together Aguilera and Stewart co-wrote two tracks for the soundtrack album being "Show Me How You Burlesque" and "Express". In addition to this he also worked on various other tracks for the album. He produced two remakes for the soundtrack – "Somethings Got a Hold On Me" and "Tough Lover".[8] Songwriter Claude Kelly confirmed he co-wrote three songs for the movie.[9]
Cher's power ballad "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me". The song was written by Diane Warren who wrote Cher's 1989 top 3 smash "If I Could Turn Back Time". This has the feel of an instant classic. I am particularly loving the stripped down production which leaves a bit of a raw feel to Cher's performance matching the words of the song perfectly.

Singer-songwriter Sia Furler and Samuel Dixon collaborated with Aguilera on a song for the film: the love ballad, "Bound to You".[11] Aguilera said "Bound to You" was her favourite song from the album.[12] Further, it was confirmed that the album would feature contributions from Linda Perry and Ron Fair.[13] Cher recorded two tracks for the album: the first song/opening number "Welcome to Burlesque", and the power ballad "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me", which was written by Diane Warren and produced by Matt Serletic.[14] The song is also Cher's first original song in seven years.[4] Aguilera said that she wanted the soundtrack to resemble the sounds of her 2006 album Back to Basics with an addition a modern-day sound and a "Big bottom-end bass in the beat, then old-school horn pops – things like that".[12]

Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic commented that it was Aguilera' musical return since Bionic and back to the stages of her studio album Back to Basics. He notes the production values on the soundtrack and the success of the compositions, he then says "Some of this stuff is quite good, particularly when Christina swings her hips to Etta's lead, bringing to mind the zest of 'Ain't No Other Man'".[7] Slant Magazine's Eric Henderson called the album "a collection of post-disco boogie remakes and recreations", commenting about Aguilera, "But there's way more fission from the numbers that recast her as a bionic Lady Marmalade: the nasty, buzzing bump-and-grind 'Express' and a truly bizarre BPM cover of Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People" that even Baz Luhrmann may have suggested was a little much".[6] The New York Daily News gave the album a mixed review saying "Cher puts every one of her sixty-four years into this number, coming out with a signature song that's in no way camp and in all ways thrilling", however they also said "Regardless of the material at hand, though, Christina constantly throws her voice around with such generic abandon, it speaks not of emotion but of athletics".[5] Billboard's Kerri Mason gave the album a positive review, saying it showcased Aguilera's "distinctive flair for the big band style", adding that her second collaboration with Sia Furler, on the song "Bound to You", "rings just as true as their first, on Bionic".[16]

- "Express" is a promotional single, premiered on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS FM Radio Show on November 3, 2010 but was never sent to radio for adds.[24] The song charted on international charts and charted on U.S. Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 at #2.
- "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" charted on U.S. Dance/Club Play Songs debuting at #35 and reaching number one.[25]
- "Show Me How You Burlesque" charted on U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at #70, on Canadian Hot 100 at #92, on New Zealand Singles Chart at #8, on German Singles Chart at #89, on Swiss Singles Chart at #26 and on Australian Singles Chart at #29[26]
Promotion
Several teasers were released for promotional purposes including the Etta James classic "Something Got a Hold On Me".[27] This was then followed by the track "But I Am a Good Girl" which was released in November 2010. Cher's track "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" was also released as a promotional teaser, the track has been met with a good reception, About.com said that the track felt like "an instant classic" and they also commented on how the stripped down production method "leaves a bit of raw feel to Cher's performance".[10] The album was made available in various packages and on Sony's Music Digital Store they announced the release of two worldwide bundles for the Burlesque soundtrack one featuring the standard album with the movie poster and the other with the soundtrack, poster and a one-hundred-seventy-two page hardcover book which features a one page forward by Aguilera and a three page introduction by Cher.[28]
The album was released in full on November 15, 2010 on music.aol.com as a promotional tool.[29] On November 18, 2010 Aguilera performed the track "Bound to You" from the Soundtrack and gave an interview to Jay Leno[30] On November 19, 2010 Aguilera gave another television interview to Ellen Degeneres then she performed a track from the soundtrack, the Etta James' track "Somethings Got a Hold on Me"[31] Christina Aguilera performed "Express" at the 2010 American Music Awards.[32] Aguilera then gave an "in-depth" interview about her personal life and also about the film for the promotion of the soundtrack and the film to Chelsea Handler.[33] On the same night Aguilera performed the Etta James track "Somethings Got a Hold on Me" on the Conan O'Brien show Conan, she also gave another interview for promotional purposes for the soundtrack and the film.[34] Aguilera performed on the season eleventh finale of Dancing With the Stars and for the first time she performed the soundtrack song "Show Me How You Burlesque".[35]
