Brandon Parva is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Brandon Parva, Coston, Runhall and Welborne, in the English county of Norfolk.
Brandon Parva is located 6.4 miles (10.3 km) south-east of Dereham and 9.5 miles (15.3 km) west of Norwich.
History
[edit]Brandon Parva's name is of mixed Anglo-Saxon and Roman origin and derives from the Old English for a settlement with a thorny bush on top of a hill and the Latin for a small settlement.[1]
In the Domesday Book, Brandon Parva is recorded as a settlement of 5 households in the hundred of Forehoe. In 1086, the village was part of the estates of Alan of Brittany.[2]
Within the village is the Seventeenth Century red-brick Manor Farmhouse, which has been Grade II listed since 1951.[3] Nearby, are a pair of stone gateposts which date from the same period.[4]
On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Runhall.[5]
Geography
[edit]In March 2011, the population consisted of approximately 30 people. In 1931 the parish had a population of 111.[6]
L.F. & H.F. Harrison, Agricultural Engineers and Contractors are based in Brandon Parva.[7]
All Saint's Church
[edit]Brandon Parva's parish church dates from the Fifteenth Century and is built in the perpendicular gothic style. The church was significantly restored in the Nineteenth Century with stained-glass installed by Heaton, Butler and Bayne.[8] All Saints' has been Grade II listed since 1983.[9]
Brandon Parva Treehouse
[edit]In 2005, four students from the University of East Anglia began erecting a carbon-neutral treehouse in the woods outside of the village. After two years of building, the structure was finally demolished by South Norfolk Council in 2009.[10]
Governance
[edit]Brandiston is part of the electoral ward of Wicklewood for local elections and is part of the district of South Norfolk.
The village's national constituency is Mid Norfolk which has been represented by the Conservative Party's George Freeman since 2010.
