1000 Crore Club

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Bollywood 1000 Crore Club)

1000 Crore Club is an unofficial designation by the Indian film trade and the media, related to Indian language films that have grossed 1000 crore (10 billion Indian rupees or $135 million) or more either within India or worldwide. The 1000 crore club is preceded by the 100 crore club. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) became the first Indian film to gross over ₹1000 crore worldwide.[1] It grossed ₹1,430 crore across all languages in India and grossed ₹1,810 crore worldwide.[2] It stands as the Highest-grossing film in India domestically till date.[3][4][5] It was followed by Dangal, which is the Highest-grossing Indian film, expanding the club to 1900 crore (including domestic gross of 350 crore),[6] before creating the 2,000 crore (US$240 million) club,[7] and becoming the fifth Highest-grossing non-English language film of that time. In 2022, two films released in the span of a month, RRR[a] and KGF: Chapter 2,[12] grossed over ₹1,000 crore at the global box office. The club expanded with films like Pathaan (2023),[13] Jawan (2023),[14] Kalki 2898 AD(2024),[15] and Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024),[16] with the latter being the fastest film to achieve the record.

History

[edit]

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which released on 28 April 2017,[17] became the first Indian film to cross the 1,000 crore (US$153.56 million) and 1,400 crore (US$214.98 million) marks, in May 2017, and briefly became the highest-grossing Indian film worldwide, before being overtaken by Dangal. Baahubali 2 is the highest-grossing film in India, where it has grossed 1,417 crore (US$217.59 million).[citation needed] Overseas, it is the highest-grossing Indian film in the United States ($21 million),[18] where it became the first Indian film to cross $20 million, as well as becoming the first Indian film to gross over $10 million in the United Arab Emirates.[19]

Dangal (2016), following its Chinese release on 5 May 2017,[20] became the Highest-grossing Indian film of all time and fifth highest-grossing non-English language film of that time, crossing ₹2,000 crore ($307 million) worldwide, making it the first Indian film to gross $300 million worldwide and one of the top 30 highest-grossing 2016 films (surpassing the $299.5 million gross of Alice Through the Looking Glass).[21] Dangal is also the highest-grossing sports film of 2017, and Disney's fourth highest-grossing film of 2017.[22]

Dangal is the first Indian film to exceed $100 million nearly 1000 cr overseas[23] crossing ₹1,400 crore ($215 million) in international markets, including ¥1.29 billion (US$191 million) in China[24][25] and ₹41 crore ($6.3 million) in Taiwan.[citation needed] Its overseas gross in China more than doubled its domestic gross of $84.4 million in India. In China, Dangal became the 16th highest-grossing film of all time, the 8th highest-grossing foreign film,[26][27] the highest-grossing non-Hollywood foreign film (surpassing Japanese anime film Your Name),[28] the leggiest box office release (cumulative gross 83 times its opening day haul,[27][29] surpassing Zootopia),[30] had the most consecutive days with a ¥10 million (US$1 million) gross (surpassing the 30 days of Transformers: Age of Extinction)[31] and $1 million gross[27] (38 days),[32] was the highest-grossing film in May 2017 (ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales[33] and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2),[23] and is the year's second highest-grossing foreign film (after The Fate of the Furious).[34] In 47 days, the film had 44,445,270 admissions at the Chinese box office.[35] Aamir Khan's earnings from Dangal is estimated to be ₹300 crore ($46 million),[36] the highest payday for a non-Hollywood actor.[37]

S.S. Rajamouli, the director of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) and RRR (2022), is the only Indian film director to direct two films that earned over ₹1000 crore. Shah Rukh Khan, the lead actor of Pathaan (2023) and Jawan (2023), and Prabhas, the lead actor of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) and Kalki 2898 AD (2024), are the only two actors to lead two films each that earned over ₹1000 crore.
