Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan is MNA from NA-17, now a prominent poliician in national scenario of Pakistan. His grand maternal father belonged to Birote. He is unbeatable political gaint since 1985.

Saeed Ahmed Abbasi, Amir Jamaet e Islami Abbottabad belonged to Birote. He is candidate of PK-45 in next election. He is lawyer and an educationists.

Birote is a town in the Circle Bakote area of Abbottabad District in Pakistan, between the borders of Punjab and Kashmir. It has two higher secondary schools for boys, five religious schools, 75 mosques, a bank, a post office, Upper Dewal Kohala Road and New Kohala Bridge. It is part of Hazara Division.

Etymology

There are several theories about the origin of the word Birote, all of which are based on combinations of words in the Dhondi language. One theory holds that it is derived from beer (wrestler) and wet (place); in the past, Birote was famous for wrestling and related sports. These eventually evolved to become Bi+rote or bee+rote. Another explanation is that Birote is a combination of bee (twenty) and rote(bread).[citation needed]

Population

The total population of Birote is 23,000 as of the 1998 census. The main ethnic tribe of the area is Dhond Abbasi, Lahrals sub-tribes, Khanals in Termuthin and Lahoor, Nakodrals in Kau and Bhan, Chingsal in Birote, Basian, Julial, Sulial, Huteri and Hotrool, Mojwals in Morha and Nakar Mojwal. The Dhond Abbasi tribe has been a feudal and ruling tribe in the area for five centuries. The founder of the Dhond tribe of Birote was Lahr Khan, who died in 1233 and is buried in Sunblanean, Termuthean. Other tribal groups in the area include Awan, Syeds, Mughals, and Bhati Rajpoot.

Geography

Birote is the administrative centre of Bakote Kalan Union Council in the east of Abbottabad District.

Birote is surrounded by the areas of Bakote, Nathia Gali, Ayube Reala, and the Union Council of Dewal Sharif in Murree Tehsil. It is located on the banks of the Jhelum River. The highest place in Birote is the peak, called Samannat, of Mukeshpuri mountain, located approximately 90 kilometres north of Islamabad. Mukeshpuri is 2800m / 9100 feet high and covered with pine trees. It is an attractive hiking place for tourists but, in winter, is extremely inhospitable due to constant snow cover. Manwan ni hell is the lowest place in Birote. It is located on the right bank of the Jhelum River, just next to Basian, at the provincial borders of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Azad Kashmir.

Hazrat Molana Mian Pir Faqirullah Bakoti Usmani

Hazrat Shah Ali Hamdan arrived in Kohsar in mid of 12th century and Kethwal Rajpoot tribe embracesed Islam before him. Hadhrat Molana Mian Pir Fakir-u-llah Bakoti Usmani came in Kohsar in 1880 and released a Verdict about Juma Prayers seven years before in 1873. He started Juma prayers in Khooas Masjid Central Birote in 1908. He performed duties as Imam in Ghosia Masjid Baglotian during 1980-90 and Khooas in 1990-10. He had been living and got married there more than 30 years. [1]

Infrastructure

Birote has forty primary schools, and two higher secondary schools (one for boys and the other for girls). It also has a bank, a post office, and a telephone exchange of 30,000 lines.

There are two roads that link Birote to the rest of the country; the Kashmir Highway and the Upper Dewal Kohala Road, also known as Khaqan Abbasi Road. Other roads linked with Birote are Swar Gali Bakote Road, Basian Malkote Road and Basian Bakote Road, Choorean Lower Dewal Road, Termuthean Malkote Road, and the newly-built Termuthean Lower Dewal Road.

Bus service on the Rawalpindi-Srinagar Road started in the 1900s (decade). The first transporter was Mohammad Amin Khan, who later founded Allied Chiraghddin Transport Company. Srinagar Rawalpindi Transport Company was also pioneered on this route.

Government

In 1961, the Ayub Khan administration, as part its local government reforms, replaced the Namberdari system with local bodies namely: Union Councils, Tehsil Councils, and district councils. As a result, the Union Council of Bakote was formed and included Bakote, Birote and Birote Khurd as its wards. According to the 1961 census the population of Bakote Union Council was 18,000 and Birote's was 10,000. In 1981, General Zia implemented a new regime and in 2000, President General Pervez Musharraf enforced a new local bodies system. The current nazim of Birote is Mohammed Afaq Abbasi.

Birote in Numberdari System of British rule

Britishers occupied India in 1857 and introduced a Numerdari System as a local body system in Pakistan and bulldozed old Diwan System that was in time of Mughels and other emperors in India. Numberdar must be reliable and a loyal person of a village who act as spy of government of time. He was an intelligence man who was in interaction with his local police station, tehsil and district administration. He was also a serviceman of his village jurisdiction and final authority of attestation of land transferring to one to other. He was responsible of law and order situation, registration of new births and death. He was head of four safaidposhes (White Wearers) and six watchmen of his village. There were many Numberdars in Birote with full authorities and honor by their government since 1962. It is very stranged that all Numberdars belongd to Central Birote but not other area from Knair Pull to Punjab Khyber Pekhtoonkhawa provincial border in North to South and from River Jhelum to Mokeshpori in East and West.

Numberdars of Birote

• Sultan Mohahemmed Alvi Awan was the first Numberdar of Birote from Lammian Larhan. He was highly educated person of his time. His era was 1873 to 1915.
• Mohammed Feroz Khan was the first Numberdar who was the solo head of Numberdari System in Birote since 1910 to 1972. He headed all local Jirgas and hearings of domestic disputes of communities, divorced hearings and announced decisions with counseling of other Numberdars. The last Nazim of Birote Afaq Abbasi is his relative.
• Haji Qalander Khan was Numberdar of Birote more than sixty years.
• Haji Isab Khan was also an honorable Numberdar, Chief of Nikodral of Kahu East and Birote Khurd and close comrade of Khan Abdul Qayoum Khan of Muslim League.
• Habeebullah Khan was a Numberdar of post Indian partition. He was a noble man and never had taken any decision against people will. He had also an other honor that he was the tallest personality of Birote. He was a mobile history of Circle Bakote.

Modren Numberdars

There are five Numberdars are in Birote, two of them are active in local revenue system, politics and in society. Others have no power as revenue attastation but they have political as well as social weight with their sub tribes fellows.

Active Numberdars

• Haji Ibraheem Khan is an active and on duty Numberdar of Birote. He is elder son of Numberdar Haji Qalander Khan and no transfer of land may be possible without his attestation before collectors (Tehsildars) of District Abbottabad Revenue Department.
• Gulab Khan Abbasi is also possessed same powers as Numberdar Haji Ibraheem Khan. He is son of Habibullah Khan Numberdar and active member of local Nawaz League. People of Birote grant him great honor and dignity and invite him in their disputes for fare justice. He was legal advisor of Union Council Birote during 2005-10.

Inactive Numberdars

• Nazer Khan is younger son of Mohammed Feroz Khan but powerless as revenue matters. He is also member of local Nawaz League.
• Nazir Khan is elder brother of Nazer Khan Numberdar.
• Javaid Iqbal Abbasi is younger son of Isab Khan Numberdar of Kahu East. He is also Chief of Nikodral Dhund Abbasies. He is an active member of Tehreek e Insaf Circle Bakote.

Birote in national and provrncial political system

Hazrat Pir Atiqullah Bakoti Usmani, was first NWFP Legislative Assembly member (MLA) from Circle Bakote after independence during 1952-56. Second picture of his apponent Sardar Hasan Ali Khan of Boi but he had not won the success in first election of country.

Birote was part of NWFP Lagislative Assembly constituency no 05, eastern Abbottabad before Pakistan Freedom. Abdurahman Khan of Lora was first Representative in Provincial Assembly in first election in 1946 as a candidate of Muslim League. Hazrat Molana Mian Pir Atiqullah Bakoti Usmani, the younger son of Hazrat Molana Miayan Pir Faqirullah Bakoti Usmani was the first member of NWFP Legislative Assembly (MLA) in first countrywide election in 1952 from Circle Bakote. His only political opponent was Sardar Hasan Ali Khan of UC Boi at that time but lost his candidature seat forever. Birote was base camp of his election. In 1970 election, Birote was an integral part of NW-7, Hazara III, In 1977 election, it was NA-12, Abbottabad one whilr NA-11, Abbottabad one, NA-17, Abbottabad one in 1998 and NA-36 and PF-$5 Abbottabad one in 2002. Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan is PML (N) front line leader and ex premiership candidate MNA from NA-17 and MPA is his younger son Shamoon Yar Khan. Jamaet e Islami is an opponent of PML(N) in this are as Habeeb u Rehman Abbasi is candidate of NA-17 while Saeed Ahmed Abbasi is candidate of PK-45.

General Ayub Khan Local Bodies System instead of old Namberdary System

Union Councils System in Pakistan introduced by former President Ayub Khan (Field Marshal) in 1961. In Birote Union Council System established in 1961 also. Leaders and heads of Birote.

Union Council Heads

• Sardar Mohammed Irfan was the first Union council Bakote Chairman from 1961 to 1965. He Was an influential person with a large crowd of bradrimen. He formed a committee for construction of Govt Middle School building in Merra Kahoo Sharqi. All Union Council voted in the affirmative, and collected money for this cause from Peshawar to Karachi. Land for school gifted by Ayub Khan near School and building of school was completed within two months. District Agriculture Department sprayed and cooperated with local Apple growers and they produced Golden and King Amri apples on his demand Said department also constructed dams on nullas. He died in 1983 in Rawalpindi.
• Sardar Azad Khan of Basian was second chairman of Union Council Bakote/Birote. He elected in 1966 election and got vote of confidence from UC councillors. He also gained educational upgradation of Government Middle School Birote as High School in 1969. New classes were started in 1970. A shed was constructed in premise of school for technical education on his recommendations, that flew in 1972 by heavy wounds. He was a contractor and he started second bus service from Basian to Rawalpindi in 1977. He died in 1988 in Rawalpindi.
• Haji Muhammad Azam Khan was first chairmain of birote kalan. He is engaged business in

Kohala and Rawalpindi. He gave first water supply scheme to the people of birote in 1984. He died by heart failure on 27 October 2011.

• Qazi Sajawal was the last Chairman of Union Council Birote Khurd during 1981 to 1985. He belonged to Mojwal Family of Mohrha Birote Khurd. He constructed a way from Mohrha to Birote Kalan but the leader of construction party was assassinated there in 1984. He is engaged in business in Karachi.
• Ghulam Irfan Khan was second chairman of united Union Council possessed office from 1985 to 1988 of Birote. He worked for electrification, water supply scheme and telephonic interaction during his tenure. He got funds from District Council and constructed Hotrerhi Choke to Mohrha road first time. Najib Abbasi of Julial, Shaheen Haider Abbasi of Basian and Abd-ul-Gafoor nickname Khushi Mohammed of Kahoo Sharqi were his councillors. He died in 1992 in Birote.

General Pervez Musharraf Nazim System

Farmer President General Pervez Musharraf introduce a new System of Nazims with 21 councillors, two ladies and two Kisan councillors. He also amended law of local bodies and eligibility of Nazims and Councilors termed must minimum matriculate. This amendment exited all old illiterate professional general councillors and chairmen who elected with power of his tribe majority. This system produced Mohammed Irfan and Mrs Fayyaz, belonged to minority tribe as kisan councillor first time. There are two nazim elected as a leader of Birotian, one is Tahir Faraz Abbasi, a highly educated person of educated Khanal family of Kahu Sharqi nad second is Afaq Abbasi belonged to farmer Numberdri system of past.

Local Bodies Election of Birote Results in 2001

The first Local Bodies Election under Ex President General Pervez Musharraf Nazim System was held in 2001. Tahir Fraz Abbasi won and elected as first Nazim of Birote. He constituted a panel against Mehtab Group and won 3061 votes from 16 wards of Union Council of Birote. The runner up Imran Husain (Mehtab Group) as media report had won 2934 votes. Other candidates who won election and became Genral Councilors were Zoaq Akhter Abbasi with 643, Abdul Ghafoor (Khushi Mohammed) 572, Abdul Majeed of Basian 547, Sajid Quresh 515, Atiq Abbasi 492, Abdurazaq 478, Mohammed Aazan 476 and Mohammed Jan 482 votes. Tahira Islam Abbasi of Kahoo East and Robina Feyaz Rajpoot of Upper Basian elected on special women seats while Farooq Abbasi of Juleyal was elected on farmer (Kisan) seat. There were 16 poling stations in Union Council Birote, 10 in Birote Kalan and 6 in Birote Khurd. These poling stations were Termuthean, Kahu East, Girls Primary School Birote, Higher Secondary School Birote,BHU Birote, Middle School Basian, Boys Primary School Birote, Girls Higher Secondary School Birote, Juleyal, Naker Mojwal, Sangrerhi, Bhan, Naker Qutbal, Luhoor and Mohrha. Mohammed Aazan of Birote Khurd was in bottom of election as loser with only 475 votes .

Tahir Faraz Abbasi

Tahir Fraz Abbasi

Tahir Fraz Abbasi was the first Nazim of Birote during President Musharraf's term in office. He belonged to Kahoo Khanal sub-tribe. His uncle Haji Sarfraz Khan was first Accountant General of Pakistan, Nasir Fraz Abbasi DRO (NADRA) Muzaffarabad is his elder brother. He practicing as a lawyer in district courts Abbottabad. Politically, he is a worker of ruling party Pakistan Muslim League (Q). He constructed Choorean to Khekhran, Hell to Hotrerhi Pull Link road, Chorean Juleal Road. He had lost his seat in Birote in 2005 as Nazim, but he played a very constructive role in Birote politics. Among others Gulestan Abbasi (Naieb Nazim), Khushi Mohammed, Shaheda Islam Abbasi and Shamim Akhter Abbasi were in his cabinet.

Mohammed Afaq Abbasi

Mohammed Afaq Abbasi is the second Nazim of Birote. He is worker of Ex-Chief Minister and vice president of Pakistan Muslim League (N) NWFP Mehtab Ahmed Khan and elected due to his Dhond Abbasi sub-tribe Kamalaal majority. He belongs to a learned and educated family of Musaddiq Abbasi, a brigadier of Pakistan Army and ex-lumberdar Sardar Feroze Khan (died 1972). He not only attended the house of UC Birote monthly meeting regularly but also is also spending lots of time with UC fellows to tackle the local problems. He served the UC by putting his all efforts to help the homeless peoples of the UC after the earthquake. He also acted a very constructive role in anti Didarism movement in Birote in his last days of as UC Head in second half of 2009 with the help of religion loving people as Saeed Ahmed Abbasi and local journalists. He and his colleagues completed their time period in the last month of 2009. He stamped a post office created Razgar Scheme forms as a help of needy people.

Geographical composition of Birote

Birote is the last Union Council of KPK in South Eastern border of Kashmir and Punjab. Birote is situated in between of Dewal, Bakote in South and North while District Bagh of Azad Kashmir and Natheagali in East and West. Birote is also a composition of more than one dozen villages.

Kahoo

Kahoo is in between Birote and Termuthean, starting from Bandi in east to Nakkar Qutbal and Ram Kot in the west. Kahoo means Olive tree in local Dhondi/Kareali language. Sufi Gull Baba shrine is located in the eastern edge of Kahoo, near Ayubia forest. First lawyer from this area was Tahir Faraz Abbasi & the first Accountant General of Pakistan Mohammad Sarfraz Khan belonged to Kahoo.Muhammad Suleman Abbasi s/o Said Akbar Khan was the first graduate/M Fazil from this village,he for the very first time in the history started a School In Birote Kalan at Loower.

Termuthian

Termuthian located on the boundary of NWFP, Punjab and Azad Kashmir. Termuthean means Thirty Hands Joined in local language. Former name of Termuthean was Sumbanean, where ancestor of Lahrals, sub tribe of Dhonds Sardar Lahr Khan buried.

• Some people are highly educated and work in the Middle East, Europe, USA, Australia and Canada.
• In Terumuthia three primary schools.
• One middle school, a bank but not operated and cancelled.
• The major sub-tribes of Dhond abbasi is Khanals and Nawabals, Lashkariyals. Others are Bukhari Sadat, Dhneayals, Gujars and Awans.

Basian

Basian is the end of Union Council Birote towards northern side of the Hazara Division. New Kohala Bridge, famous Pir Mohrhwi Built Knair Pull is situated in northern end of Basian too. Basian is a famous place for centuries and populated from Vedic age. Historians as Seyed Mehmood Azad, Noor Alahi Abbasi and Professor Karam Haideri in modern time and as Pundit Kelhan in past say that Basian is a place where forefather of Ratnal Dhond Abbasies first freed current Union Council Birote from Karhral and laid down foundation stone of Dhondi Civilization on the left bank of River Jhelum in 14th century. He established feudalism and awarded him as a sub feudal of Gakher Dynasty. Raja Haider Zaman Keani, a Gakher Historian of modern time with the reference of Mohammed Din Foaq narrated that at that time Jesrat Khan was ruler of Kohsar and a younger son of Rattan Khan Malik Azam Khan killed in an invasion on Multan by Jesrat Khan. Rattan Khan Sateled in Central Basian and his dead body returned to Chaman Kote on his elder brother Chanden Khan. He buried with honour as an immortal guardian of Gakhers.

Basian role in Kashmir independence movement

Basian had become a base camp of Jihad e Kashmir after World War II and acted a positive and constructive role in Kashmir Indepance. Famous freedom fighters of Basian emerged as bacon of light for Mujahedins against Dogra Raj in Kashmir. Some important events are as under: –

• 14 August 1947. Juma tu widah (Muslim holy month Ramadan last Friday) prayers in Basian, and Yaqoob Khan emergency telegram to last Maharaja of Kashmir Hari Sing to quiet Srinagar.
• 30 August 1947. Sardar Qayoum declared as insurgent and ordered his arrest alive or dead, father in law Mir Akber Abbasi refused to any asylum to him and he crossed River Jhelum by the help of Qaem Ali Khan (Qaloo) at Nawli in Lower Birote.
• 12 September 1947. Sardar Qayoum general meeting held in Agency Ground Murree where Peoples of Basin announced every kind of co-operation with Muslim Conference in Kashmir Independence movement.
• 22 September 1947. Mujahedins under the commandership of Isab Khan first encounter with Dogra Army at Kohala Bridge and occupied Kohala Bazaar after one day struggle, 30 Dogra troops arrested by Mujahedins.
• 6 October 1947. A meeting of Mujahedins held at the residence of Haji Abdul Karim Khan Abbasi of Bunni Pandi where a Muslim Magistrate Sultan Maqsood announced for supply of ammunition to Mujahedins.
• 8 October 1947. Another meeting of Mujahedins and Sardar Qayuom held in the same place and finalised the attack plan over District Bagh. Molana Muzaffer Husain Nadvi, Pir Ali Asgher Shah, Shamshad Shah, Kabir Shah, Haji Abdul Karim Khan Abbasi (Bunni Pandi), Molana Yaqoob Alvi Birotvi, Haji Isb Khan and other people attended this meeting.
• 17 October 1947. Mujahedins attacked on the house of Gokal Chand at Helsurang, Minhasa leaded by peoples of Abbasian. A few troops killed. They also occupied Khwader Bridge on same day.
• 21 October 1947. Mujahedins attacked and accopid Muzafferabad city and killed five hundred Dogra troops.
• 9 November 1947. Mujahedin occupied Rawlakote, forwarded to Tolipir, attacked on Dogra Army at Sahr, freed 24 hostages there.
• 11 December 1947. A deadline of attack on Srinager finalised in a secret meeting at Basian presided by Haji Abdul Karim Khan Abbasi of Bunni Pandi (Head of Anwal Brotheri).
• April 1948. Central Command and control Room established at residence at Lower Birote Roshan Khan residence.
• Mid-May 1948. Dogra troops hostages caravan of Kashmiri refugees on Kohala Bridge. Peoples of Abbasian kidnapped a Dogra Army Captain and hanged in center of bridge and set deadline to open bridge doors for 10 minutes against Campton life. Dogra Army fulfilled the demand immediately and five thousand refugees crossed bridge and interred in Bakote Circle and Murree Hills.

Kanair

Kanair (كنير)is a nullah between Birote Kalan and Birote Khurd [2] and running more than ten millennia. This nullah played a main role in the construction old Birote Society. Many families belonged to working class were living on the right edge of Kanair nullah. They were running water mills. A tribe called Rakheal(راخيال) or guards of Birote also lived there. Word Kanair is derived from the name of a botanical herbal plant used in Auo-vadic medicines.

Mohrha

Mohrh(موهره)a is a word means a small adjoining place of a town. Other words are used in this meanings are Hel. Mohrha is situated in central Birote Khurd that damaged by a large landslide beneath it. Sarwar Abbasi Naib .Nazim UC birote also live in mohara. He also belong well reputed business family .he is also member of tehsil council abbottabad. On UC first and last head Qazi Sajawal was elected as chairman in 1992. People of Mohrha largely businessmen and settled in Kashmir, Rawalpindi and Karachi.

Nakkers

There are two Nakkers in Birote Khurd, on is Qutbal and other is Mojwal. Nakker means a sharpest place in hilly areas.

Nakker Qutbal

This Nakker (نكرقطبال)i s placed at south west of UC Birote, UC Malkote is in south and Khanaspure Ayoubia in west. This Nakker is on the name of Qutab Khan, a son of Rattan Khan. The population of Nakker Qutbal is more than three thousands.most of these people have left and live in pirwadhai rawalpindi after the earthquake. Micronations as Dhond Abbasi and Satties, Awans and some Kethwals are living there with hospitality and harmony. A large forest Kandaran full of herbal plants and wild life is also there. Muslim saint Gull Baba passed his last day in this forest and buried there when he breathed last.famous trader in Karachi Imteaz abbasi jamil ahmed abbasi advocate and gul rehman abbasi famous political worker belonged to Qutbal sub-tribe of this Nakker. First water mill was constructed in Nakker Qutbal in the 15th century at Jandran ni Dheri.

Nakker Mojwal

Naker Mojwal is a main and important village of Birote Khurd. This view (from Sangralan, Birote Kalan) of Hotrerhi and behind it Nakker Mojwal, Narhi Hoter,Cholottean, Moni Dheri and the third highest Himalayan peak Moshpuri. Qazi Sajawal Khan under construction link road is also seen in this picture.

Moj Khan (موج خان ) was an ancestor of the Mojwal sub-tribe of this Nakker, so the name is derived from this personality of old time. He was a feudal lord of 16th century and possessed land from the peak of Moshpuri to Kanair in east and west and from Lohwer Nulla to Hotrole Nullah as south and north. More than two thousand descendants of Moj Khan live there. Mojwals are living in Basian and central Bakote also. Other parts of Nakker Mojwal (نكر موجوال) are Hotrerhi, Moni dhari and Narhi Hoter.

Hotrole

Hotrole(هوثرول)is possessed by Birote Kalan Hajeal and Dhereal sub-tribes in the 16th century from Karhrals. Hotrole means paddy fields and cultivated for centuries but downfall of area started when a large landslide gutted Petlan ni Hell, south of Hotrole in 1942. Only some dozen people are living there now. All people migrated in Birote Kalan. Most populated parts of Hotrol are Sangrerhi and Narhi Hoter.

Agreement between people of Hotrole and Birote Kalan

A water supply scheme donated by a Peshawer based NGO BEST by efforts of Brgd (R) Musaddiq Abbasi completed construction from Hotrole to Birote Kalan, while ex nazim Birote Tahir Fraz Abbasi get stay order from court. This situation created very tension between Birote Kalan and Hotrole but solved. A meeting was called on 20 July 2009 in Union Council by nazim Afaq Abbasi and signed an agreement between Hotrole and Birote Kalan than construction is completed in last week of November 2009.

Bhan

Bhan (بهن ) means a pond of water, but there are no ponds near the jungle. The northmost part of UC Birote is inhabited by Nikodral sub-tribe, with some Awans and Seyed families also living there. Renowned advertising boss of Circle Bakote Kalim Abbasi belong to this area. Mostly people are transporters and drivers working in Karachi. Some Awan families migrated to Bhara Kahoo near Islamabad. A jeep able link road was constructed in Mehtab era. Population of Bhan is one thousand and five hundred only. Other part of area is Chlotean and very beautiful.

Education

Birote is a relatively well educated Union Council with a population of 30,000, it has two higher secondary schools, two middle schools, 58 primary and mosque schools and more than one dozen religious institutions. The traditional religious education by the religious scholars and teachers of this area has for centuries been influenced by the older Vedic tradition. The old society of Circle Bakote was disturbed by the Sikh invasion in the first decade of the 19th century and all of the old religious families were expelled from this area. This led to a loss of educational environment that affected the individual names of both sexes because Sikh soldiers destroyed the local human values as well as culture. This continued until the downfall of Sikh Army in Rawalpindi, Haripur and Hazara Division. The local people initially welcomed British Rule instead of Sikhashai but also fought War of Independence against them in 1857 and paid a huge loss of lives and properties.

Early educational institutes

British Government stepped forward to modernise Murree Hills and Circle Bakote according to recommendation of General Sir James Abbott (founder of Abbottabad city and chief of Boundary Commission in 1846 –62). He recommended his officials that only Zimindari school needed to provide clerks, revenue staff and lower class local servants. The Osia High School is a first educational institute that established this area in 1887. The first Vernacular Primary School established in Bakote, Khanaspore/Reala and Boi in 1898 but with the lack of interest Reala School came on the verge of closedown. Chiefs of Birote take serious notice of mentioned position and a caravan under the leadership of Haji Qalander Khan met educational authorities and requested to shift this school to Birote. They offered to provide buildings and teachers accommodation free of cost. This request of Birotians accepted and Reala Vernacular Primary School shifted to Birote in March 1902, the first teacher was Molana Mohammed Ismail Alvi, first student was Nazar Mohammed Khan (Fatherer of Raja Haiderzaman).There are private schools and collages are also open in Birote.

Boys Higher Secondary School Birote

Vernicular Primary School Reayala (Union Council Palak now) was the first British Government gift for Circle Bakote people in 1898 but did not produced any student till 1904. NWFP Education Department decided to shut down this institution but degnatories as Wali Ahmed Khan, Ali Merd Khan, Abdul Kareem Khan, Mir Haider Khan, Sardar Ameer Khan, Shair Dil Khan,Mehmood Khan, Lakhi Zaman Khan, Mian Mohammed Ji Alvi and other met with Capton C P Thomson, Dupty Comisioner Hazara in Abbottabad and requested him for shifting of school in Birote, offered two building and local teaching staff. He accepted their offer and Vernacular Primary School Reayala to two buildings owned by Mohammed Hasan Khan and Abdul Kareem Khan at Baglotian, Central Birote.

• The first Head Teacher of Vernacular Primary School Birote was Mian Molana Mohammed Ismaeel Alvi, Second teacher was Seyed Fazal Husain Shah and Sardar Mahna Sing.
• The first badge of twenty students enrolled in school was Sardar Nazar Mohammed Khan, Numberdar Mohammed Feroz Khan, Ali Akber Khan, Kala Khan, Sardar Ahmed Ali Khan, Mohammed Ibraheem Alvi, Noor Husain Alvi and others.
• School upgraded as Middle in 1958 and first head Master was Ali Haider Khan of Basian.
• Middle School building completed before winter of 1964 and middle school classes shifted in April 1964 in new building.
• The land for school donated by elders of Khanals and Nikodrals of Kahoo East with possession rights to Education Department of NWFP and administration of Union Council Birote in 1963.
• Middle school Birote further upgraded by NWFP Education Department on first July, 1971.
• First Head Master of High school Birote was Shafiq u Rehman of Kokal Bersin, Havailian appointed in June, 1971
• Admission in metric class open in July, 1971 and first student from Birote in 9th class was Mohammed Pervaiz son of Taj Mohammed of Lamyan Larhan..
• School Hostel has constructed for non local students in 1978 by a local contractor. After Earthquake, hostel was declared as school building for one year.
• Ex Chief Minister of NWFP Mehtab Ahmed Khan further upgraded this educational institution as Higher Secondary School in 1997.
• First Principal of Higher Secondary School Birote was Imteaz Ahmed Abbasi of Hell, Termuthean.
• New building of School has constructed by contractor Raja Haiderzaman Abbasi with cost of Rs. four million and eight thousand as gift to all Birotians from Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan, the CM of NWFP in 1997.
• Earthquake of 8 October, 2005 damaged school old building and classes shifted to new constructed building in 2006.
• Higher Secondary School victimized by science teaching staff, science labortry and becoming an arts students producing institution.
• Old damaged building is become controversial in old land lords and they claimed as their own property without transferring of right because last Union Council has lost the document of school property. New building on old site also late and no funds allocated for school building till now.
• General Maqsood Abbasi (elder brother of ex Nazim Afaq Abbasi) won first position in Metric examination in 1976 and never beat him till now in school.
• Lawers Sajjad Abbasi, Shuab Abbasi, Dr. Israr Abbasi, Scientist in NASA Nisar Abbasi, journalists Mohammed Obaidullah Alvi, Fida Abbasi, Sajjad Abbasi, Talib Abbasi, Saheem Abbasi, Pakistan Muslim League (N) local leaders Iftekhar Abbasi and ex Nazim Afaq Abbasi, Amir Jamaat-e-Islami district Abbottabad Saeed Ahmed Abbasi, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf local leaders Tahir Amin Abbasi, Abid Ali Abbasi and Nazim Tanzeem-e-Islami Khalid Abbasi and many more bright stars are also products of this school.

Girls Higher Secondary School Birote

The prestigious and history maker ladies educational institute is Girls Higher Secondary School Birote which serving since more than one century and educated seven female generations. People of Birote were holding very bright vision about female education and they achieved a female institution on their demand in 1910.

• Girls Primary Secondary School Birote first established in Kahoo East till World War one.
• School shifted in a new constructed house of Sardar Mohammed Irfan Khan, first Chairman of united Union Council Bakote in 1921 at Phagwarhi na Bagla (In between first Salfia Masjid and Zoaq Akhter Abbasi shop now) in Birote.
• The first Head Teacher was Ajaeb Bibi, belonged to Qureshi tribe of Kahoo East and daughter in law of Alvi Awan of Birote.
• School remained open there till 1982 and then shifted in Serorha, Central Birote.

Modern education

In last decade of 18th century, Seyed Masoom Ali Shah of Juleal, Birote introduced a mobile private school in Birote and all first batch of teachers were provided by him in 1902. After his mission in the 1980s, Bashir Abbasi of UC Bakot established Yasin Public School in Birote first time. Saeed Ahmed Abbasi, Amir Jamat e Islami had founded Seyed Ahmed Shaheed Academy in Central Birote in 1984 and changed into a chain of schools. It was a milestone of modern education in Birote and it create a religio-modern and political thoughts in student's minds. A new way of learning and with modern Western syllabus introduced by SEEDA School System in 2001 in Birote and gained a high popularity among educated parents of students. The owner of this school is also a high educated fellow named Iftekhar Abbasi, an ex-employee of Seyed Ahmed Shaheed Academy and now he established two campuses with co-operation of his elder brother, Minjah model school is also a popular institute,it is a combination of Islamic and modern education.Head of Minhaj model school Muhammad Munib abbasi is educated and most popular person. Other modern institutions of Birote are Suddam Model School and Aeries Model School. Another new educational institute is Iqra Academy School the owner of this school is Anser Mehmood Abbasi school located in sehrora Birote and a religious school Jamia Ali-ul Murtaza in khohuti, northern Birote. Latest arrival of educational institution in Birote is Greenland Public School at Choorean, Kahoo East by Liaqat Abbasi of Rewat, Murree in 2011.

Religious education

In Dravidian, Arian and than Kathwal civilisation, vedic education was taught in Mukeshpuri and Kohala Davi temples. Around 1400 AD under Hazrat Sha Ali Hamdan, Circle Bakote and Kathwal embraced Islam, donating in favour of Madrissas and mosques. This system was continued by Dhond Abbasies when they accompanied Circle Bakote and Murree Hills from Kathwals in 1500 AD. Dhond Abbasies offered religious scholars very handsome endowments after the downfall of the Gakherhs dynasty in 1800.

Religious families

• There was Hindu rule at the time of victory by Mahmud of Ghazni in Kohsar.
• Culture gradually changed gradually by invasion of Muslim communities.
• Religious culture was in full swing until the 14th century when Shah Ali Hamdan came and preached here.
• First mosque in Kohsar had no record but first mosque in Murree was built at Potha Sharif in 15th century and at Baglotian in Birote in 16th century.
• All previous religious families ascaped from Kohsar during Sikh diturbance in 1800–25 and all new families came here after 1830.
• First religious tribes of UC Birote who relaunced Islamic wisdom and religious education are Bukhari and Mashadi Syeds of Kahoo East, Termuthean and Birote, Alvi Awan of Central Birote, Qureshies of Birote Khurd and Jadoons of Basian.

• Weekly Qumi Tashakhess Rawalpindi is second largest circulated weekly of Kohsar. Rukhtaj Abbasi of UC Phagwarhi is Chief editor of said weekly. This newspaper have very positive role in anti Didarism Movement in Kohsar during 2009-11. (Didarism is the same new fake faith as Ahura Mazda of old Persia that emerged by Didar Shah near Islamabad.)
• Weekly Hill Star is third newspaper of Kohsar started by Saleem Barlas of Dehla, Murree. Renowned journalist, historian and anthropologist Mohammed Obaidullah Alvi and Ishteaq Abbasi, President of GCBUJ, are editors of Hill Star. This newspaper is neutral and covering all aspects of present time society, politics and all issues faced by people of Kohsar. This newspaper introduced new standerds and techniques in Kohsarian's journalism. It is very popular newspaper in all influential circles in politics, religio-speritual as well as social fields. Top highly educated and experienced respected journalist and writers are contributors of Weekly Hill Star.

• First journalist of Birote who started the publication of first fortnightly TERJUMAN Karachi, was Ghulam Kibreya Abbasi (died in 1982) belonged to Khanal tribe of Kahoo East. His 16 pages paper was two color and read every where of Circle Bakote and Murree Hills in 1973–78.

• Saeed Ahmed Abbasi published weekly Akhbar E Kohsar Karachi in 1985 and 1988.

• Galyat Circle Bakote Union of Journalists [3] is a solo representative organisation of Circle Bakote journalists who are working with print media and electronic media in all over the Pakistan, established in 11 July 2004 at Government Higher Secondary School Birote.

Birote literary history is very old but who recognized themselves are a few persons. Some of them are as named in near past and presnt are as under:-

Poets and poetess

• Molana Mian Mohammed Yaqoob Alvi Birotvi was a poet of Urdu, Arabic and Persian since 1924 to his death on 5th June, 1985. He wrote thousands of grave apithapes in Circle Bakote beside a book NAGHMA E JIHAD. This book is unpublished but it is a master piece of Holy War (Jihad) of Kashmir. He was teacher, a scholar of Islam and a historian.
• Iqbal Husain Shah Mukhlis Birotvi is also a well reputed poet of Birote. He taught in High School Birote more than two decade and retired in 2000. He migrated Mansehra in same year, established a private school in Shinkeari and satelled there now with his sons and grand sons. He wrote a book FIKR E FERDA during his prime age and published in 1998.
• Molana Saeed U Rehamn Jadoon of Basian is also a poet of UC Birote. He expressed his views on religion, theosophy and current affair. His book about to print in 2013.
• Hedayat Khan, father of Dilkhurram Abbasi also wrote a poetry book in Punjabi language about his experience of World War Two as a British Indian Army personal. The book is in possession of Dilkhurram Abbasi but yet not published. He died in 2007.
• The younger daughter of Molana Abdul Haq Jadoon was first poetess of Circle Bakote belonged to Basian also wrote a poetry book in Punjabi. She died in Rawalpindi in 2011.

The first Biography of Prophet Mohammed in local Dhundi Language, published in 2006.

• Mohabbat H Awan of Birote wrote the Bible of Alvi Awan Tribe named TAREEKH E ALVI AWAN. The other book is biography of Prophet Mohammed, ASAN NAIN NABI PAK HOR the first book in local Dhundi Languge and won Seerat Award in 2008. He is also author of more than one dozen book.
• Naeem Abbasi is the first pen man who wrote Dhund Abbasi Tribe history in 2011 among more than a hundred family trees. His book JANNAT SAY ORUJ E ABBASIA TAK is a detailed socio political account of 14 centuries of Hazrat Abbas's (Prophet Mohammed Uncle) descendants in Circle Bakote, Murree Hills and Hazara Devision. Mohammed Obaidullah Alvi is also a journalist, historian and anthropologist who discovers Kohsar history since 5000 BC.

Crimes in Birote

Birote is a very peaceful area of Circle Bakote and crime rate is very low among other union councils of proposed Tehsil. Bakote Police Station receives only a few low level social complaints that solve on spot by Union Council Adjustment Body. Some historical crimes are paying reflection in modern time committed in past.

Judicial Systems in old days

An assembly of Birotians all time established in this area called Dewan(ديوان). This assembly possessed many more authorities about social, religious, political and foreign affairs matters.

Social crime laws

Behr Mang (بهر منك ) (old name of Birote) always in a condition of peaceful atmosphere in all time of history. In Vedic Age the laws of society were according to Vedic Hidu teachings. If any body committed murder he would be a slave of murdered family and called him Pandi( باندي). A rope called Glanwi (كلانوي ) was tied in his neck and he never disobeyed them. The other form of penalty of murder was called Orha (اوره). Orha was a land that had been given by murderer party to deceased person’s family forever. The third form of penalty of murder was marriage of a young daughter or sister of killer's to deceased brother or son. These form also continue in modern time also.

The people of Birote felt helplessly when they appeared before judges in any Abbottabad court of law. They entered in law profession but in a very short contacts. A few lawyers of Birote practicing in Abbottabad, Rawalpindi and Karachi nowadays.

• Mohammed Shuab Abbasi of Basian is first lawyer who appointed as Judge from Birote at Sawat in 1996.
• Abdul Qayoum Qureshi of Bahk, Termuthean was first lawyer of UC Birote. He practiced in Rawalpindi from 1950 to his death in 1995. He is also first lawyer of Pakistan Supreme Court from Birote.
• Mohammed Nawaz Abbasi of Hotrol, Birote Khurd is senior lawyer from Birote who practicing in Sindh High Court since 1972 in Karachi.
• Mohammed Arshad Abbasi is also a senior lawyers from Naker Mojwal, Birote Khurd, practicing in Rawalpini since 1975. He has built his house near Higher Secondary School Birote now.
• Tahir Fraz Abbasi is also a senior lawyer is practicing in Abbottabad since 1980. He was first Ex Nazim of Birote and Ex President Bar Council.
• Sajjad Abbasi, a leader of Pakistan Peoples Party Birote, brother in law of famous Doctor Mehmod Ahmed Jadon Qadri and lawyer in Abbottabad since 1986.
• Saeed Abbasi Saeed Ahmed Abbasi and Sajid Quresh Abbasi are also lawyers but never practiced.

Damage by earthquake

The area was affected by the 2005 Kashmir earthquake – a year after the quake an Earthquake Reconstruction & Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) team visited Birote to resurvey damaged houses damaged by earthquake and to pay relief cheques. A five-member delegation of Circle Bakote, headed by Abdul Rehman Khan Abbasi, met with federal ministers and the constituency leader, Amanullah Khan Jadoon on 23 October 2006, about the unavailability of earthquake relief funds.

In earthquake the most effected village was Abbasian,about 215 houses destroyed 8 people died and 15 ingured.First aid was sent by near village Ausia to the people of Abbasian at 19:30 pm same day.

Tribes and communities

There are many tribe both as Dhond Abbasi or others living and participating in local politics, commerce and development of area. The main tribes are: –

• Chandal tribe of Dhond Abbasies are livinig in Bandi Chandalan, Lower Birote. MNA Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan's mother was the daughter of said Chandal tribe of Birote.
• Mojwal, sub tribe of Dhond Abbasies are the major tribe, partly migrated to Union council Bakote in 17th century, when Karhral tribe exiled to eastward of Mokeshpuri Mountain in Gallies.
• Qureshi tribe is also existed in Basian with high religious and traditional academic qualification, including Islamic Scholars, Herbal Doctors (Hakeems), journalist and drama artists.
• Alvi Awan tribe is a noble micro nation of Union Council Birote with largest scholars and ulemas. They came from Qummikot Azad Kashmir on invitation of Kamlal Dhund Abbasi tribe of Birote and they started a Madrissa and a Masque here in 1838. They are catered in all over country and play an important role in progress, dignity and prosperity of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. They adopted professions of Islamic preachers, scholars, lawyers, journalism and education.
• Jadoon, Salarzai are living in Central Basian since 1826. Their ancestors came from Havelian and first satelled in Kahu East and then in Basian. Their fore fathers engaged in religious duties, teachers in British rule and now businessman and government employees.
• Rajpoot and Kathwal and Kathwal of Birote tribe is in minority in this place. They are migrating to mega cities in country for better standers of life and business opportunities. Pakistan Peoples Party worker Hafiz Rajpoot son of Hasham Din Rajpoot belonged to this ancient Indian local tribe.
• Sadat tribe is also exted in Birote. There are two branches of Sadat, one is Mashadi Seyeds and second is Bukharies.

Facts about Union Council Birote

• The first chairman of united Union Council Birote, Birote Khurd and Bakote was Sardar Irfan Khan during 1962–65. He and second Chairman Azad Khan of Basian were elected twice.
• General Councilor Shair Dill (Old Union Council) and Zoaq Akhter Abbasi in new UC System) elected twice.
• There was no lady councillor in Qazi Sejawal cabinet.
• Jamila Khatoon was first lady councillor from a minority Kethwal tribe elected first time in new local bodies system. Unfortunately she died during her councillor ship.
• Shahida Islam Abbasi first lady councillor who won her seat twice but in second term she lost her councillorship by sue of Shamim Akhter Abbasi, ex female teacher and lady councillor from Termuthean. Shaheda Islam Abbasi has a credit of Choorean to Sindhwari Hell Link Road Birote construction on self-aid basis.
• Fazal Rehman Abbasi, husband of Ebarat Bibi a lady councillor of UC Birote, participated in close door session of Nazim and general councillor instead of his wife.
• Union Council of Birote, Birote Khurd and Bakote was divided in 1982 and first chairman of UC Birote was Haji Muhammad Azam Khan of central Birote was elected.
• Union Council Birote was divided again in 1992 as UC Birote and UC Birote Khurd and First and last Union Chairman of Birote Khurd was Qazi Sejawal Abbasi of Mohrha. Union office was in Hotrairhi. Vice chairman was Sadiq Khan (Narhi Hoter).
• Mouhmamd Sarwar Abbsi from Mohara is the first Mumber of thasil council Abbottabad.
• A new Water Supply Scheme is now completed in Birote. This relief is provided to thirsty people of Birote by the efforts of Brgd (R) Musaddiq Abbasi, a son of soile, with cost of 5 millions. He termed it as a gift from him. UC nazim and all councillors congretulate him on the completion of this scheme.

Historical notes

• Birote was a part of Bakote until 1981 when a separate Union Council was formed.
• Birote was first mentioned in a book of a British tourist Legacy To Kashmir published in 1891 (reprint by Sang-e-Mil Publishers Lahore).
• Birote was a part of Hazara constituency in the 1936 elections when only 7 landowners cast their votes.
• This area was well known throughout the province for its golden apples, but now Rawalpindi supplies apples to the area.
• Professor Ghulam Kibria Abbasi of Kahoo was the first journalist who published weekly Tarjuman Karachi as the first news-magazine of Circle Bakote.
• Molana Abdurehman was the first Martyere of Circle Bakote who embraced martyrdom in Srinager in 1931, belonged to UC Birote.
• The first Muslim transport company was established in 1920 by Mohammad Amin Khan which was named Allied Charaghdin Transport Company running buses between Rawalpindi & Srinager.
• First Agitation against a teacher of Primary School Birote Azizurehman Qureshi of Thala was held in Basian in 1976.
• First Vadic Hakim who won publicity in South Asia was Hakim Qazi Zafir-ul-Haq Alvi Chishti (born 1918; died 1997) and founder of Jadid Chishtea Dawakhana in Rawalpindi. He was personal physician of Ex-President of Pakistan General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq and renowned poet and writer of Pakistan Anthem Hafiz Jalindhri. He also taught in Osia High School before 1947 and his renowned people is Brigadier Taj Abbasi.
• The first largest funeral prayer in Birote was in memoriam of Benazir Bhutto at Choorean in Kahoo Sharqi on 28 December 2007.
• First Water Supply Scheme was built by Haji Muhammad Azam Khan in 1984 with cost of Rs. 5.8 million while second scheme was donated by Brgd (R) Musaddaq Abbasi with co-operation of Peshawer based NGO The BEST and completed in November 2009.
• The first writer of Dhondi/Kareali language is Mohabbat Husain Awan of Lammian Larhan, wrote life history of Islamic prophet Muhammad in 2006. Mr Ayaz Abbasi a civil servant presently working with ERRA discovered an old civilisation in Birote. He was the person who ever in the history of Birote discovered the remains of old Behrmang civilaztion near Dana masjad and kunair kus. He laid down the foundation of civil society volunteer social work in the area. He constructed bridal path, street pavement and established a free dispensry in the area on self-help basis. He helped out thousands of effects on their door step during the earthquake 2005

The HWO is the first and last registered welfare of uc Birote on 1998.
