Birgit Derntl is an Austrian clinical psychologist and psychotherapist. Birgit Derntl is Professor (W3) for Women’s Mental Health & Brain Function in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Tübingen Center for Mental Health, University of Tübingen, Germany.

Education

Birgit Derntl studied psychology (Diplom) at the University of Vienna. She obtained her doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in Psychology (summa cum laude) from the University of Vienna, Austria, in 2006, under the mentorship of Ilse Kryspin-Exner and Ewald Moser. As a graduate student she investigated the role of the amygdala for explicit emotion recognition and studied the effects of ethnic group as well as sex hormone profile at the MR Center of Excellence affiliated with the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna from 2004 to 2006. After completing her doctoral studies, she joined RWTH Aachen University as a postdoctoral research fellow of the International Research Training Group 1328 Schizophrenia and Autism. She returned to the University of Vienna in 2009 where Derntl completed her (Habilitation) in 2012.

Research Interests

She is a full Professor for Women's Mental Health & Brain Function, investigating the nuanced influences of sex/gender and sex hormones on behavior, brain architecture, and mental health. Derntl's research interests lie at the intersection of social and affective neuroscience, with an emphasis on sex/gender differences in association with sex steroids. She began with emotion processing and recognition,[1][2][3][4][5] moving on to investigating empathy, where she showed sex/gender differences.[6] She further showed that empathic abilities are impaired in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia[7] also in comparison with other clinical groups[8][9] and in individuals with ultra-high risk of psychosis.[10][11] In depressed individuals, Derntl reported sex/gender differences in approach and avoidance behavior,[12][13] as well as causal attribution and emotion regulation.[14]

Her most recent work focuses on women’s mental health, exploring the influence of hormonal transition periods and hormonal therapy on mental health, brain function, and architecture.[15][16][17][18] She found that estradiol administration affects brain function[15][16] and effective connectivity[19] in naturally cycling females. She also demonstrated that intake of oral contraception affects empathic behavior and the underlying neural networks[20] and reported sex/gender differences in stress reactivity in women and men.[21] Together with colleagues at the University of Tübingen, Derntl is exploring the nuanced complexities of sex/gender differences within the realm of neuroscience.[22] Her work has been broadly cited on numerous topics, such as Depressive realism, Self-serving bias, Causes of gender incongruence, Neuroscience and sexual orientation, Combined hormonal contraception, and Anger.

She is involved in the steering boards of prominent research centers, such as the "Tübingen Center for Mental Health" as part of the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG). Since 2023, Derntl has served[23] as co-spokesperson of the International Research Training Group (IRTG 2804) “Women’s Mental Health across the Reproductive Years” – a collaboration with colleagues from Uppsala University, Sweden.

Derntl’s work has been supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF).

Career

In 2011, Derntl was appointed Assistant Professor for Translational Neuroscience in Psychiatry and Neurology at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. In 2015, she was appointed Full Professor (W3) at the Department of General Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University of Tübingen, Germany. She continues her neuroscientific research in the field of mental health. Derntl actively contributes to advancing research in various capacities, including editorial roles, board memberships, and organizing academic events.
