Asterionella is a genera of freshwater diatoms found worldwide. It has a greenish color.


The cells are joined at the apex by mucilage pads to form stellate or spiral colonies. Some populations are particularly susceptible to chytrid infestations.

Asterionella have no means of locomotion. It is most likely a combination of gravity and currents that distribute the organism.

Under the microscope, Asterionella have a measure of 3.9mm, or 3900um.
