ABVP was started in 1948 after Indian Independence with the objective of channelizing student's energies in the task of national reconstruction by a group of students and teachers and registered on 9th July 1949 and the day of registration is also celebrated as National Student Day across the India.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad is an all India student Organization, working in the field of education with a wider perspective of National Reconstruction. ABVP works with a faith in the collective existence of the educational community, a firm belief in constructive work and a nationalist approach which stays above partisan politics.

Independence brought in its wake the challenge of reconstruction. The genius of the country has rusted hundreds of years of foreign rule. It was imperative, therefore, that the society re-organised itself in all its fields, each member doing his bit in his own field. As the reorganization and reconstruction, of each field would ultimately result into national reconstruction, the Parishad chose the field of education as its field of activity.

Founded in 1949 in Delhi, ABVP has gradually spread its work across various universities in India. ABVP runs projects and programmes aimed at national integration and social consciousness programmes to solve the economic and other problems of the students and programs to encourage the hidden talent of the Students, with a view to bringing the best out of everyone. Thus ABVP conducts Book-Bank, Students' Vacation Employment Bureau, First Class First Felicitation Functions, Inter Collegiate and inter-University Music Competitions, Painting Competitions, Literary Competitions, Student- Writers' Meets, Sports Meets, Social Participation Campus, Personality Development Camps, Technical, Medical, Management, Agri Students Workshops, Technical Exhibitions, Indo-Foreign Students' Bureau, Study Circles and Art Circles, Students' Experience in inter-state Living, My Home is India, Students for Development etc.

World Organisation for Students & youth (WOSY)

During the International Youth Year 1985, ABVP took the initiative of launching the World Organization of Students and Youth (WOSY). It is the first international youth body with India as headquarters. It was launched in Delhi on 29th October 1985, in the midst of Indian and Foreign students delegates from 14 countries. The organisation was inaugurated by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the former Prime minister of India. Today Various isms and social systems, based exclusively on material pursuit, have failed to give man satisfaction and fulfillment. The need of coming decades is the ascendancy of humanism and spiritualism which could be the foundation of human welfare and which could five lasting solution of the cries of culture and survival. It is also felt that there is no international forum of students and youth that stays above the interests of power blocs and thinks in terms of the welfare of the whole humanity. The WOSY is such a forum that will promote international understanding based on humanism and spiritualism and will consolidate the international forces of peace rising above the interest of power blocs.

Contributions

ABVP always raise their voice on the issue of terrorism in Kashmir, infiltration of foreigners into Assam and border states and the issue of reservation and Mandal recommendations. They played an important role in the task of integrating north-eastern citizens with those of the other parts of the country. They had played major roles in many rescue operations after natural calamities like the earthquake in Marathwada and Gujarat.

Publication

The official ABVP magazine Rashtriya Chhatrashakti is published monthly in Hindi from New Delhi.
