Abigail "Abi" Branning is a fictional character in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders. She is played by Lorna Fitzgerald.

Character creation

Abi Branning, played by Lorna Fitzgerald, was introduced in 2006 by executive producer Kate Harwood. She and her immediate family - father Max (Jake Wood), mother Tanya (Jo Joyner) and older sister Lauren (Madeline Duggan) - are an extension of the popular and long-running Jackson/Branning clan, who had appeared in the serial since 1993. Fitzgerald, in her first major role, began filming for the soap in May 2006 and made her first appearance on-screen in June.[1]

Lorna Fitzgerald's real-life mother, Teresa, said: "Personally, I feel I want to show how proud we are of her and to thank everyone who has prayed for her and helped her in any way." Fitzgerald was informed about the role via her agent and turned up to the BBC studios in London for the first of three auditions.[1] Mrs Fitzgerald said, "At first, it is just the look they go for. Then it is more intensive and she had to read from a script. By the second audition, she was still up against 60 or 70 people. You start thinking about it when she gets to the third audition, but when the agent rang up and said she had got the part it was an overwhelming feeling. You don't know what it means until that point. It is exciting for her to be in something her friends may be watching. In the past, she has been in programmes they couldn't watch."[1] As Lorna Fitzgerald was only 10 years old when she got the part, she was required to balance her filming requirements with schooling in Northampton, and learning lines.[1]

Storylines

Abi moves to Albert Square in 2006 along with her parents Max and Tanya and sister Lauren. She becomes friends with Ben Mitchell, but scares him when she predicts his father Phil will marry to his girlfriend Stella and send him to a strict boarding school. Ben confides in Abi that Stella has been hurting him, believing it to be a normal part of growing up and saying that Tanya is abusing Lauren in the same way. Worried that it will happen to her one day, Abi tries to run away from home with Ben. On Stella and Phil's wedding day, she encourages Ben to tell everyone about the abuse.

Abi is hit by a car after Max fails to pick her up from school, but has only a broken wrist and cuts and bruises. Max takes his family on a spontaneous holiday to Spain after Stacey Slater threatens to tell Tanya about her and Max's affair. However, they return later in the year. She is involved in the local nativity play in December 2007, playing the narrator after a rivalry with Bernadette Logan over who will play Mary and Abi's attempt to injure Bernadette. Abi's brother is born and she names him Oscar.

At Christmas, Max and Stacey's affair is revealed and Max and Tanya separate. Abi sneaks out to see her father, giving him keys to the house so he can let himself in. Max leaves Walford, but Abi later gets him to return after sending him a text from Tanya's phone. Max is run over and hospitalised. It is revealed that Lauren was driving the car, and Abi publicly attacks Lauren. She is jealous of the attention Lauren receives, especially when Lauren is put into care. However, Abi later forgives her. Lauren returns home after being found guilty of GBH with intent. Tanya and Max's relationship improves, and Abi hopes they will get back together, preparing a dinner for them. However, Tanya sees this and tells Abi she got the wrong impression, and she and Max will not get back together.

She is widely recognised as one of the nicest and most liked characters in Eastenders, due to her loving and cute personality combined with a maturity and intelligence.
