The 1er arrondissement is the least populated of the 20 arrondissements of Paris, France, though it's also one of the smallest in land area. It is heavily charged in office and administration. The arrondissement is located mostly on the Right Bank, but it also administrates the west end of the Ile de la Cité. It is one of the oldest arrondissements in Paris, the Ile de la Cité dating back to Ancient times and some parts on the right bank (Les Halles included) dating back to the early Middle Ages.
A significant part of the arrondissement is harbouring the Louvre and the Tuileries Gardens.
Demography
The peak of population of Paris 1st arrondissement actually occurred before 1861, though the arrondissement exists in its current shape since the re-organization of Paris in 1860. In 1999, the population was of 16,888 inhabitants while the arrondissement was also hosting 63,056 jobs, making it one of Paris arrondissement the most concentrated in activity after the 2nd, 8th and 9th arrondissement. The arrondissement is very small, with a land area of only 1.826 km² (0.705 sq. miles).
