There is nostalgia for the 1980s in Australia, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the UK, the US and elsewhere.

Generation Z

Generation Z are nostalgic about the 1980s, in anglosphere countries[1][2] and in Japan,[3][4] even though they were born after the end of the 1980s. Tom van Laer (University of Sydney) and Davide Christian Orazi (Monash University) described the effect of the television series Stranger Things on Generation Z as "pseudo nostagia", [5] but Charles Fairchild (University of Sydney) disputes that concept and label.[1]

Music

1980s nostalgia music genres include synthwave, vaporwave, chillwave, sovietwave, the '80s remix and hypnagogic pop.

Australia

There is nostalgia for the 1980s music of Kate Bush.[1] The Newsreader (2021) is a is a nostalgia television programme about the 1980s.[6]

Germany

There is more nostalgia for the 1980s than for any other decade.[7] There is nostalgia for 1980s Italo pop[8] and the 1980s music of artists such as Nena and the Scorpions. Deutschland 83 (2015) is a nostalgia television programme about the 1980s.[7]

Japan

In Japan, 1980s nostalgia is part of the broader phenomenon of "Shōwa nostalgia" and "Shōwa retro".[9] There is nostalgia for 1980s television programmes such as Takeshi's Castle[10] and The Best Ten;[11] for 1980s city pop,[12] new music[13] and kayōkyoku music;[11] for the 1980s music of artists such as Mariya Takeuchi,[13] Yōko Oginome,[14] Meiko Nakahara, Saki Kubota,[13] Akina Nakamori, Seiko Matsuda[15] and Wink;[16] for 1980s arcade games such as Pac-Man and Galaga;[17] for 1980s floral pattern tableware;[18] for 1980s vending machines;[19] for 1980s analogue technology such as disposable cameras[4] and cassette tapes;[20] and for 1980s second hand goods.[21] Extremely Inappropriate! (2024) is a nostalgia television programme about the 1980s.[22] Musicians ClariS (2023) and NewJeans (2024) have performed cover versions of 1980s songs that imitate the stage routines of Wink and Seiko Matsuda.[16][23]

South Korea

There is nostalgia for the television programmes, music and fashion of the 1980s.[24][25] There is nostalgia for 1980s technology such as cassette tapes.[26] Reply 1988 (2015) is a nostalgia television series about the 1980s.[27][28]

United Kingdom

There is nostalgia for the 1980s music of OMD,[29][30] Level 42 and Bucks Fizz; and for Frankie Say Relax T shirts, New Romantics, Smash Hits, Filofax, spandex, fluffy dice,[31] Blake's 7,[32] rave,[33] 1980s jewellery,[34] and 1980s Christmases.[35] Now 80s is a 1980s nostalgia music television channel.[36] Ashes to Ashes is a nostalgia television programme about the 1980s.[37] The Here and Now Tour is a 1980s nostalgia concert tour.[38] There are 1980s nostalgia cruises[39][40] and websites.[31] I Love the '80s and Match of the Eighties are 1980s nostalgia documentaries.

Briscoe said that 1980s nostalgia frequently views the 1980s through an American lens that does not accurately reflect 1980s Britain.[41]

United States

There is nostalgia for 1980s music, fashion[42] and hairstyles.[43] Nostalgia television programmes about the 1980s include That '80s Show (2002), Everybody Hates Chris (2005), The Americans (2013), Halt and Catch Fire (2014), Stranger Things (2016)[44] and Paper Girls (2022).[45] Totally Killer (2023) is a nostalgia film about the 1980s.[46] I Love the '80s is a 1980s nostalgia documentary.
