On 30 June 2015, a C-130 Hercules aircraft belonging to the Indonesian Air Force crashed near a residential neighborhood with 12 crew and 109 passengers on board shortly after taking off from Medan, in Indonesia, to Tanjung Pinang, killing all aboard, along with 9 people on the ground.

At the time of the crash, the plane was used in an operation to carry logistics to isolated area in Borneo. It was also confirmed that the plane was also used by Indonesia's First President Soekarno after it was given from the United States at around 1960's. [5] Shortly after the crash, Head Staff of Indonesian Air Force ordered to ground all Hercules C-130 fleet in Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport (as the plane involved originated from the airport) for an inspection, fearing of another crash.[6]

Incident

The Hercules took off at 12:08 p.m. (0508 GMT) from Soewondo Air Force Base and crashed in Medan about two minutes later. The crash site is approximately 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the base. According to Indonesian Chief of Staff of the Air Force Marshal Agus Supriana, prior to crashing, the pilot had requested permission to return to base.[7]

According to eyewitnesses and Indonesian media, right after the plane made contact to tower to return to base, the plane suddenly rolled to the right. An eyewitness said that after the plane rolled, it then clipped a base transceiver station, dove, "roared very loudly", and "exploded in the sky".[8] The crash site took place on Djamin Ginting Road in Medan, which according to most eyewitnesses, after it dived, around five explosions can be heard from 1 km. The wings then clipped a hotel and struck three buildings, one of them was a crowded massage parlor. It then exploded and disintegrated as onlookers describe it as "a hell like scene" when an inferno occurred and bodies were thrown onto the street.[9]

It was the deadliest Hercules C-130 crash in Indonesia, the third-deadliest air disaster in North Sumatra province, and the second air disaster in Indonesia within six months.[10] The crash occurred only 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) away from the 2005 Mandala Airlines Flight 091 crash, something that has been remarked on by news sources.[11]

Passengers

The aircraft was transporting military personnel and their families for duty rotations.[12] The passengers include those who boarded the plane from Malang, Jakarta and Pekanbaru; the aircraft was scheduled to continue to Tanjung Pinang, Natuna, and Pontianak before returning to Malang.[13][14] Such flights are common in Indonesia, and it is common for families to be transported together in military planes.[7]

Crash site

The crash took place in a crowded residential neighborhood in Medan, Indonesia's third-largest city.[15] The plane took off from Soewondo Air Force Base, formerly Polonia airport, the city's main airport. The airport was replaced by Kualanamu International Airport in 2013,[16] partly due to concerns proximity to urban areas (2 km from the city center). The airport has since become an air base and served as the headquarters of the Air Force's Western Surveillance Wing.[16]

The airport was also the origin of Mandala Airlines Flight 091 in 2005, which similarly crashed in a residential area in Medan minutes after takeoff.[17]

Investigation

Because the plane was not fitted with any flight recorders, the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee will rely on the aircraft's wreckage pattern and the pilot's flight history for the invesigation.[18][19] On 1 July 2015, all of the ammunition and two engines from the aircraft were successfully removed from the crash site as part of the investigation.[20]

The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) has claimed responsibility for the passengers and crews who died in the crash and said that they would pay the insurances at about Rp 2.25 trillion. The investigation was suspected to finished in two weeks. It was confirmed that the preliminary report will not be made public.[21]
