2011 Formula One World Championship

The 2011 Formula One season will be the 62nd FIA Formula One season.

In January 2009, the Portuguese magazine Autosport reported the possible return of Formula One to Portugal, at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in 2011. Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has also visited the Portimão circuit. He is concerned as to how many European races the sport will have in future, and doubts that other European countries can maintain their races. It is possible the Portuguese Grand Prix will return in 2011.

Ecclestone is in negotiations to bring the Argentine Grand Prix back to the Formula One calendar. Although the former Grand Prix track Autódromo Juan y Oscar Gálvez and a street circuit in Mar del Plata have been discussed, he demands a new circuit to be built.

It is also possible that the French Grand Prix will return after two years' absence, most probably at the new Flins-Les Mureaux circuit near Paris, but the Circuit Paul Ricard is also possible.

Calendar changes

• The FIA has yet to confirm the calendar for 2011. Melbourne will retain the Australian Grand Prix until 2015 after signing a contract in July 2008. It is unlikely the Australian Grand Prix will become a night race as the start time for the race has only been moved back to 17:00 local time.

• The 2011 season will see the addition of the Indian Grand Prix to the F1 schedule.

• In July 2009, the Bulgarian Motorcycling Foundation announced plans to secure a Bulgarian Grand Prix at a yet-to-be-constructed circuit near Pleven, though it was later announced that the circuit would be constructed closer to one of Bulgaria's major cities; Sofia, Varna or Burgas. In September 2009 the BMF announced that the circuit would be at the old Dobroslavtsi airfield near Sofia.

Sponsor changes

• Tyre supplier Bridgestone has announced that it will not renew its contract with Formula One at the end of the 2010 season, meaning a new tyre supplier will have to be found.
