Farmers and Fishermen: Two Centuries of Work in Essex County, Massachusetts, 1630-1850 is a book by the Canadian historian Daniel Vickers, first published in 1994. The book "examines [the] shifting labor strategies used by colonists as New England evolved from a string of frontier settlements to a mature society on the brink of industrialization".[1][non-primary source needed]

It won the 1995 John H. Dunning Prize[2] as well as the 1994–95 Louis Gottschalk Prize from the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.[3][4]

The book is mentioned in the film Good Will Hunting, in which the title character, played by Matt Damon, quotes a passage he incorrectly claims to be from page 98 of Work in Essex County, about the role of inherited wealth in early America.[5][6][5]
