The 2015 Boston Marathon will be the 119th running of the Boston Athletic Association's mass-participation marathon. It will take place on Monday, April 20 (Patriots Day in Massachusetts).

The field size is predicted to be 30,000; smaller than the 36,000 runners in 2014. This includes competitors participating as part of various groups, such as twenty runners from the town of Tewksbury, Massachusetts.

Special safety measures used in the previous year will remain in place after the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, such as baggage checks and the prohibition of large items.

Race description

Course map

The event will be run along the same winding course the Marathon has followed for many decades‍—‌26 miles 385 yards (42.195 km) of roads and city streets, through eight Massachusetts cities and towns, to the finish line beside the Boston Public Library, on Boylston Street in Boston's Copley Square.[1] The Marathon has set a field size of about 30,000 entries this year.[2] However, the field size may increase if there are more entries than anticipated. This field will include 20 runners from the town of Tewksbury, Massachusetts.[3] The 2014 champion, Meb Keflezighi has entered in the marathon as well.[4] All 50 states will be represented at the marathon, as well as U.S territories, such as American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the U.S Virgin Islands.[4] All of the Canadian provinces will be represented at the marathon as well.[5]

Security

After the Boston Marathon bombings during the 2013 Boston Marathon, which killed 3 and injured over 260 people, police installed additional security measures, including bag checks and additional barriers.[6] Runners will once again have to leave their bags on the Boston Common for inspection. Last year, police banned backpacks, strollers, suitcases, glass containers, some costumes and props, weight vests, and items larger than 5 by 5 inches (13 cm × 13 cm).[6] Runners and spectators have expressed concern that their fun and happy atmosphere may be turned into a marital, gloomy atmosphere.[6] However, some traditions, including kisses from Wellesley College, will not be able to be stopped.[6]
