Thirteen colonies, separately chartered and governed, in signing the
Declaration of Independence formally broke with England to form the
United States in the late 18th century.
This content should live on whatever the proper (historians') name for the colonies is--American colonies, perhaps. Moreover, it would be helpful for the above to link to web pages about the colonies that existed before the states!
