In the 1970s, the city of Washington, D.C. concluded that there was a need for a another large airport (in addition to the John F. Kennedy Airport) to serve the city and surrounding communities. The airport was constructed in the town of Dulles, and the airport is called Washington Dulles. The airport serves both as a regional hub and as the international gateway to Washington D.C. It is a very busy airport.
